Day Treatment Counsellor Assistant

Kindree — 31 hours per week for 10.5 months (File #26-022). EveryMind Mental Health Services (formerly Peel Children’s Centre) is looking for a committed and passionate Child & Youth Worker with an interest in mental health to provide services to children and youth in a day treatment classroom environment. The classroom serves children aged 4‑11 experiencing serious emotional, behavioural, or relationship difficulties in school, home and community.

Role Overview

Working within a multi‑disciplinary framework, the Day Treatment Counsellor Assistant assists the primary counsellor during the school day, supports day‑to‑day classroom operations, and ensures the safety and well‑being of all clients. The role is held in a classroom setting and does not operate during summer, March break, and other school breaks; workers must be available for the academic year.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Day Treatment Counsellor and classroom teacher to maintain a therapeutic environment.
• Support the Day Treatment Counsellor in counselling clients individually, in groups, and with caregivers to meet treatment goals.
• Respond to and support clients’ unique mental health needs within the context of a multi‑disciplinary treatment plan and an integrated school setting.
• Take a lead role in the classroom in the Day Treatment Counsellor’s absence, developing and implementing treatment and social skills groups.
• Ensure the safety and well‑being of all clients by taking appropriate action and adhering to every policy and procedure.
• Implement and adhere to client‑specific treatment goals based on the treatment plan.
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with multidisciplinary team members, the host school/school board, and other professionals.
• Liaise with families/caregivers as required.
• Complete observation sheets accurately and maintain client records and data, documenting progress.
• Maintain current training for first aid, medications and physical intervention techniques.
• Plan and participate in client activities.
• Purchase supplies necessary for the program and account for expenditures monthly.
• Transport clients as required.

Skills and Qualifications

• Child & Youth Worker diploma with at least one year of related experience, or equivalent education and experience.
• Registration with the Ontario College of Child and Youth Care or eligibility for registration.
• Thorough knowledge of mental health issues and ability to work from a trauma‑informed lens.
• Proven understanding of a milieu environment and ability to work independently and collaboratively in a school setting.
• Strong oral and written communication, time‑management and critical‑thinking skills; strong understanding of role boundaries.
• Ability to respond to and support clients’ unique mental health needs within a therapeutic environment.
• Availability for late afternoons and evenings to accommodate meetings and family reviews.
• Availability for the entire academic year; role does not operate during school breaks.
• Knowledge of client care information systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Current Standard First Aid Certificate and UMAB certification (Understanding and Managing Aggressive Behaviour).
• Valid Ontario driver’s license (Full G Class); vehicle for transporting clients within the Peel region.
• Current Vulnerable Sector Police Check and Pre‑Employment Medical screening (including TB test, MMR, TD, Polio, Covid‑19 vaccination).

Salary & Working Hours

Hiring salary range: $42,552 - $49,787 per year (31 hours per week). Salaries are commensurate with experience.
