Position Summary
Reporting to the District Principal of Indigenous Education and Equity, the Indigenous Outreach Worker (IOW) provides school based and community-based outreach and support to Indigenous students and families. The IOW works collaboratively with schools, families, the Indigenous Education Department, and community partners to strengthen relationships, support attendance, and re-engage students experiencing barriers to school success. This role focuses on relationship based, trauma informed, and culturally responsive practices.
Job Function
- Build respectful, trust based relationships with Indigenous students and families.
- Support student attendance, engagement, and well-being through individualized outreach and re engagement planning.
- Work and collaborate with administrators, counsellors, teachers, Indigenous Education staff, and support teams.
- Participate in School-Based Team meetings, Student Engagement and Success meetings, and consultative case planning as required.
- Act as a liaison between schools, families, and community agencies.
- Develop and implement individual school re-engagement plans grounded in student strengths, interests, and available school/community resources.
- Provide immediate interventions as needed to support student safety, engagement, and well-being.
- Work individually or in small groups with students in areas such as self-regulation, conflict resolution, and reducing high-risk behaviours.
- Conduct home visits and community outreach when appropriate.
- Identify and collaborate with community agencies, service providers, and Indigenous organizations to connect students and families to appropriate supports.
- Monitor student progress, collect and analyze data, maintain documentation, and report on outcomes.
- Observe and communicate emerging trends, needs, and barriers within school communities.
- Report and document safety and security concerns in accordance with district and departmental procedures.
- Provide regular updates and written reports to district leadership, including the Indigenous Education Council, as requested.
- Contribute to district initiatives aligned with Indigenous Education, equity, and reconciliation.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Indigenous Studies, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience.
- Minimum two (2) years’ experience working with Indigenous children, youth, families, or communities, including students who have been disengaged from school.
- Minimum one (1) year of outreach or community-based work experience.
- Demonstrated experience supporting students with complex needs, including trauma, addictions, and social emotional challenges.
- Experience in case management, referral processes, re engagement planning, and community partnership development.
- Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous worldviews, histories, cultures, and contemporary issues, including the impacts of colonization and intergenerational trauma.
- Strong collaboration, communication, and relationship building skills.
- Intermediate computer skills, including data collection, documentation, and service tracking.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence and meets district requirements for driving and working with children and youth.
Hours of Work & Salary
- 30 hours per week, 8:30am to 3:10pm, Monday-Friday at $37.33 per hour
- While the position works within schools, the office space will be located at New Westminster Secondary School in the Indigenous Education Room.
- As this is a new bargaining unit position, the wage rate will be subject to review by the Joint Job Evaluation Committee (JJEC) as per the terms of the CUPE 409 Collective Agreement.
