The Financial Aid Officer (FAO) evaluates, approves, and awards financial aid to students in accordance with federal, provincial, and college regulations, policies, and operating guidelines. This position assesses financial needs of students, and advises students and family support members regarding financial aid options, processes, and requirements. Participates as appropriate in systems/procedures planning and management; implements and coordinates specific individual programs and/or assignments, in accordance with the overall objectives of the department.
The primary responsibility of the FAO position is to provide financial counselling and assistance to students to ensure they have followed the proper procedures to apply for OSAP or other financial options. Another key priority for this position is collecting funds for tuition, books or any other payments as required.
Duties and Responsibilities
Analyzes and evaluates financial viability of students and families, and provides advice and counsel regarding available financial aid opportunities, eligibility requirements, and the application process.
Reviews and assesses eligibility of applications for financial aid (OSAP); exercises professional judgment to determine whether adjustments should be made.
Reviews for accuracy and provides signature approval/disapproval of loan applications, payment plans, promissory notes, and other financial documents.
Responds to inquiries and researches and resolves problems related to transactions handled by the financial aid department; serves as liaison with other outside vendors in the resolution of day-to-day administrative and operational issues.
Provide information, in person, on the telephone, by email or other forms of communication, to students, prospective students, and families regarding student financial aid, admissions, college account balance, and registration status.
Qualifications
Previous student financial aid experience in a college environment is preferred and would be considered a significant asset.
A strong background in sales would add to the success in this position and collections experience would also be considered a significant asset.
Prior experience in a financial role where customer service and financial management were present at minimum is required.
MS Office, primarily Word and Excel proficiency required.
Good organizational and time management skills with the ability to work with minimal supervision in fast paced environment.
The successful candidate will have a post-secondary education (preferably in finance/business) as well as strong interpersonal and communication skills.
