Job Functions:

  • Analyses and identifies museum collection trends, policies and procedures to develop and initiate detailed strategies to ensure effective and efficient operational plans and service delivery related to the City's Historical Collection.
  • Directs and coordinates the delivery of collections based services (I.e. historical research, re-restorations, inventory and collections moves ETC.) and operations for the City's museum sites, clients and the community.
  • Ensures the safety, security and accessibility of the Historical Collection while maintaining current museum standards of collections management.
  • Directs all part-time specialized staff including assigning and reviewing of work. Schedules part-time staff.
  • Develops and implements quality service delivery standards, fiscal management strategies and sound financial management emphasizing internal control to assist the unit in meeting the needs of the museum sites and to achieve revenue targets. (I.e. financial reporting, variance reports, budgeting for projects)
  • Coordinates repairs to storage facilities and provides input to the Capital budget in order to provide a clean and safe venue for public and staff and to preserve the heritage features of the facility. Ensures that mechanical and electrical systems are inspected regularly. (I.e. coordinates fire inspections, elevator maintenance, pest management ETC.)
  • Coordinates collections-related issues and provides museum expertise for major Capital projects within the Museum Services unit.
  • Oversees unit activities to ensure compliance with City policies and procedures and legislative requirements. Reviews incidenUaccident reports.
  • Researches and writes scope of work documents for RFP and RFQ procurement ensuring the accuracy of specialized requirements.
  • Coordinates and executes artifact movement within professional museum standards.
  • Collaborates with Supervisor Collections & Conservation and other Cultural Services staff to deliver City-wide cultural outreach programs and services. Provides organizational assistance to museum and cultural groups and other community organizations.
  • Implements and administers innovative programs to make the Historical Collection accessible to the public through traditional and new technologies, such as the exhibition and loan programs.
  • Identifies, recommends and coordinates the implementation of technologies to support collections management objectives for all museum sites.
  • Collaborates with the Supervisor Collections & Conservation, Registrar and Chief Curator to make recommendations for acquisitions, loans and deaccessions to maintain an inventory of the collection and research pertaining to the collection.
  • Performs material culture research, writes reports and presents workshops or presentations on related collections management topics.

 

Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Post-secondary degree or diploma in museology, material culture, or other closely related discipline, or an approved combination of education and museum experience.
  2. Must possess a valid Province of Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and must qualify for the City's equipment operating permits and requirements and be able to maintain same.
  3. Considerable experience working in collections management in Museum setting.
  4. Considerable experience in conducting analyses, developing policies, operational plans and procedures, administering program budgets, establishing priorities, developing alternative revenue strategies and achieving planned results.
  5. Considerable experience in facility management including maintenance, operations and implementing health & safety standards.
  6. Considerable experience working with information technology, particularly database management and digital photography in Museum setting.

You must also have:

  • Experience writing in a variety of formats, including reports, correspondence and exhibit text an asset
  • Ability to be qualified to obtain a Firearms Possession & Acquisition (PAL) license
  • Ability to represent Museum Services with professional credibility among external stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate with staff at all levels of the City Corporation.
  • Ability to direct and develop staff in a service delivery environment.
  • Ability to develop and sustain partnerships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to identify and act on revenue generating opportunities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively work with staff, volunteers, board and other groups.
  • Knowledge of government legislation in the areas of Occupational Health & Safety, Employment Standards and Human Rights.
  • Ability to support the Toronto Public Service values to ensure a culture that champions equity, diversity, and respectful workplaces.
