About us:

Hart House is a centre for experiential education outside the classroom at the University of Toronto. Since it opened in 1919, Hart House functions as a place where students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the broader community connect with each other and the world. Through an array of co-curricular programming in the arts, dialogue and wellness, Hart House works with local and international partners to foster community and to create innovative learning opportunities for students. Hart House operates from a historic facility on the St. George campus, as well as a 150-acre farm in Caledon, Ontario, offering a wide range of services through a social enterprise model that generates revenue to support its student-focused programming on all three University of Toronto campuses.

The Finance department is responsible for all financial activities at Hart House, including all day-to-day transactional accounting, preparation of financial reports, payroll, procurement, financial planning and budget preparation and management. The department acts as a strategic partner and resource to assist Hart House management in the running of various student programs, business lines and services, and uses metrics and analytical methods to drive future decision-making and provide opportunity and growth to the organization.

Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Manager, Financial Planning & Analysis, the incumbent supports the Finance department and Hart House in a variety of financial areas, such as budgeting, information gathering, financial analysis, generating financial reports, forecasting and planning in accordance with University Guide to Financial Management and other applicable policies, agency and regulatory requirements. The incumbent also serves as the primary resource to various student groups in support to their financial activities, including supporting Hart House budget oversight and stewardship responsibilities of the Hart House Finance Committee; training and mentoring student club and committee executive members on financial policies and processes; and leading the financial literacy program for Hart House, including developing and maintaining partnerships with financial and community organizations, contributing to program curriculum, determining event logistics, developing content for promotions and outreach, assessing program success, and implementing program enhancements.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Forecasting and planning financial activities incorporating budgets with multiple sources of revenue and/or recoveries.
  • Monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on various accounts, grants and contracts.
  • Processing accounts payable according to the University Guide to Financial Management
  • Preparing and recording deposits on a regular basis
  • Advising staff on accounting practices and University financial policies and procedures
  • Advising student groups on the application of relevant policies and procedures
  • Generating standard financial reports.
  • Liaising with internal and external contacts to coordinate execution of student seminars and workshops.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in business or related field plus advanced standing in a recognized accounting program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three years’ experience in financial accounting and performing financial analysis, and within an experiential learning environment with an emphasis on program management, implementation and assessment, preferably within a post-secondary institution or the non-profit sector.
  • Demonstrated understanding of all accounting fundamentals and analytical ability are required.
  • Demonstrated experience in administrative support to committee work, including drafting and circulating agendas, meeting minutes and associated materials, coordinating event logistics, liaising with student members and following up on action items.
  • Strong technical competency and experience in database management is essential, including expertise with the University’s Financial Information System (FIS), HRIS and Kronos, PowerBI, Fusion, Microsoft Excel and the full Microsoft Office suite, Microsoft 365, Outlook and internet skills.
  • Experience with financial management guidelines, preferably the University’s Financial Guide to Management.
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex policies and accounting principles.
