Overview of role

You are not just managing a press desk. You are helping shape how the world understands WestJet’s vision, culture and brand.

As an Advisor, Public and Media Relations, you will be a proactive storyteller, trusted advisor and strategic communications partner. You will bring WestJet’s stories to life through meaningful earned media, public relations strategies and authentic communications that connect with our audiences.

The media landscape is changing. Today’s communications require more than pitching traditional news desks. They require curiosity, creativity and the ability to recognize an authentic story, turn it into meaningful coverage and share it through modern channels.

Working closely with internal stakeholders, business leaders and media contacts, you will build trusted relationships, develop compelling narratives and support communications strategies that strengthen WestJet’s reputation.

Key deliverables include:

• Proactive public and media relations: Develop and execute public relations and media strategies that turn organizational milestones, business priorities and meaningful stories into earned media opportunities. Build strong relationships with journalists and media outlets across traditional, digital and emerging channels.
• Storytelling and communications: Identify authentic stories that bring WestJet’s vision, culture and brand to life. Develop compelling key messages, narratives, media pitches and communications materials that connect with our audiences.
• Executive communications and advisory: Partner with leaders and internal stakeholders to support public communications and strengthen their communications platforms. Draft speaking remarks, media briefs, key messages and other materials that reflect the leader’s voice and align with WestJet’s culture and brand.
• Media intelligence and measurement: Monitor media coverage, emerging narratives and sentiment. Leverage media intelligence tools to develop insightful reports that connect earned media activity to brand value, audience reach and communications outcomes.
• Reputation management and rapid response: Support communications during fast-moving issues by developing timely, clear and accurate messaging, statements and briefing materials. Partner with stakeholders across the business to support integrated communications strategies and protect WestJet’s reputation.
• Integrated communications and collaboration: Work with internal teams and communications partners to identify opportunities, align messaging and deliver creative storytelling that supports WestJet’s business priorities.

Experience and qualifications:

• Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 4–5 years of experience in public relations, media relations or corporate communications.
• Demonstrated experience developing and executing public relations strategies, with a portfolio of meaningful earned media coverage at local, regional or national levels.
• Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to translate complex business strategies into clear, engaging and human communications under tight timelines.
• Experience building trusted relationships with journalists, media outlets, internal stakeholders and business leaders.
• Strong advisory and collaboration skills, with the confidence to provide strategic communications advice, challenge ideas constructively and work effectively under pressure.
• Experience using media intelligence and monitoring tools such as Meltwater, Cision or similar platforms, with the ability to interpret media metrics and communicate insights.
• Adaptability and sound judgment in a fast-moving media environment, with the ability to prioritize, respond quickly and maintain a focus on facts and strategic outcomes.
• A creative, curious and proactive approach to storytelling, with an interest in evolving media trends, digital channels and innovative communications tactics.
