The Maverick Volleyball Club serves Ottawa and its surrounding communities in providing our youth with high-quality volleyball programs. Our Club takes pride in our successful track record of promoting and fostering leadership, organizational, team, and life skills for the benefit of its members. Maverick Volleyball is seeking an experienced leader who will lead the coaching and culture portfolio, one of the most important pillars in our organization moving forward.

Role Purpose

The Coaching and Culture Leader is accountable for coach assignment, development, standards, culture and HR oversight related to coach and volunteer recruitment, onboarding, succession planning and people-process support. The role ensures that coaching quality, behaviour, communication and the Maverick culture are consistently implemented across all teams and programs, so athletes, families, coaches and volunteers experience a safe, positive and high-performance environment.

HR oversight is included in this role because approximately 90% of the club’s hiring and people-process activity relates to coaches and coach-supported volunteers, making coach and culture leadership the natural accountability point for recruitment, onboarding, retention, succession planning and conduct follow-up.

This position is one of three executive level positions, and leads the Coaching and Culture Management function, an emerging leadership function responsible for coaching standards, culture stewardship and related HR oversight. The role reports to the Executive Director and provides direct oversight of HR and designated coaching or culture support roles. The role partners with Programming and Athlete Management, Operations, Digital Experience, Marcom, Finance and Business Development to embed coaching and culture standards across programs, people processes, logistics and communications.

Key Responsibilities Include

Coaching standards, assignment and development: Lead club-wide coaching standards, coach assignment, role fit, mentoring, observations, feedback, clinics, certification support and practical resources. Ensure coaches are placed appropriately, supported consistently and developed in alignment with the Maverick culture, program goals and athlete needs.

Culture leadership and people oversight: Lead implementation of the Maverick culture across teams and programs, including onboarding expectations, communication standards, recognition, retention, conduct follow-up and culture interventions. Provide oversight of HR for coach and volunteer recruitment, onboarding, succession planning and related people-process support. Provides oversight and accountability for all human resources activities, ensuring the Club has the people, culture, and HR practices required to achieve its strategic objectives.

Cross-functional coordination and issue escalation: Partner with Programming and Athlete Management, Operations, Digital Experience, Marketing and Communication, Finance and Business Development to embed coaching and culture standards into program design, logistics, communications and operating decisions. Escalate serious issues appropriately and ensure follow-through on agreed actions.

Oversight and Reporting Relationships

Direct oversight: Human Resources function; designated coaching and culture support roles, once established. The role is also expected to establish a team of coach mentors to ensure consistent engagement at the team and program level.

Functional oversight: Coaches and assistant coaches across programs, for coaching standards, development expectations and culture alignment.

Major Challenges and Complex Thinking

• Aligning diverse coaching styles, experience levels and volunteer expectations to common standards without losing individual strengths.
• Balancing coaching excellence, culture stewardship and HR oversight within an approximately 20-hour weekly role.
• Addressing culture, conduct or performance issues early while maintaining trust with coaches, volunteers, athletes and families.
• Providing enough in-gym visibility, mentoring and follow-through across multiple teams and programs.
• Exercising direct authority over HR-related coach and volunteer processes while influencing programming, operations, communications and finance decisions through partnership.
• Translating the Maverick culture into practical expectations, routines and interventions that are visible across teams.

Essential Qualifications

Qualifications, Experience and Technical Skills

• Volleyball coaching experience: Significant volleyball coaching experience in club, school, provincial or high-performance environments, with the ability to assess coaching quality and support coach development.
• Coach development and mentoring: Experience leading, mentoring or supervising coaches, including providing observation, feedback, development plans, clinics or practical coaching resources.
• NCCP or equivalent sport certification: Relevant NCCP training, certification or equivalent sport leadership credentials are important for credibility, safe sport alignment and effective coach development.
• Safe sport, conduct and athlete-centred practice: Strong working knowledge of athlete-centred coaching, safe sport expectations, conduct processes and appropriate escalation when concerns arise.
• People, systems and cross-functional leadership: Experience supporting recruitment, onboarding, retention, succession planning, team culture or people-process work, and the ability to use relevant HR, scheduling, registration, communication or feedback systems to support decisions and collaboration.

• Communication and Cross-functional Influence: Communicates clearly and professionally; provides direction within areas of oversight and influences Programming and Athlete Management, Operations, Digital Experience, Marcom, Finance and Business Development through partnership.
• Operational Judgment and Follow-through: Manages seasonal priorities, sensitive people issues, team-level follow-up and competing demands within limited weekly hours, using good judgment and timely escalation.

Education

• Advanced Development Coach Certification

Assets

• Bilingual (English, French)
• Performance Coach Certification
• Post-secondary education in Kinesiology & Physical Education, Sports Management, or related fields.

Important Information

The expectation is for the candidate to work 20 hours per week in this role. Depending on the circumstances and the profile of the successful candidate, the organization may be in a position to offer full-time work by adding specialty coaching to the position.

The role is classified as Hybrid. Some work can be done virtually, but the successful candidate will be required to perform functions in-person on a regular basis.

As part of the final interview round, applicants will be required to organize and run an athlete and coach development session. This will be used to assess technical skills and fit for the organization. Maverick Volleyball will cover accommodations for candidates traveling from outside Ottawa and its surrounding communities.
