Education Lead and Coordinator

Job Responsibility: Homes and Senior Services Posting Date: March 17, 2025 The County of Elgin, Homes and Senior Services Department has an exciting career opportunity for a Full-Time Education Lead and Coordinator. Reporting to the Director of Homes and Seniors Services and working collaboratively with the Homes Administrator(s), the Education Lead and Coordinator will work to provide educational leadership and training for current and newly hired staff to support staff in the performance of their duties as they relate to the provision of resident-centred care and services. The Education Lead and Coordinator will provide education program development in consideration of best practices, delivery & evaluation across the three (3) County of Elgin Long-Term Care Homes. The individual will work collaboratively with departmental managers and internal and external partners to ensure an evidence-based best practice approach to education, staff & program development, in support of clinical excellence and client satisfaction. The education lead & coordinator will ensure consistent delivery & evaluation methods in consideration of IPAC, Health & Safety and Ministry compliance requirements. The Education Lead and Coordinator shall provide ongoing support to the management team and departmental staff of the three (3) County of Elgin Long-term Care Homes related to the tracking/management, electronic documentation and education software management systems to support mandated education completion. Key Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the planning, development, delivery & evaluation of continuing and annual education programs ensuring high quality and legislative compliance.
  • In collaboration with the Quality Improvement Coordinator, conduct ongoing quality assurance audits of education programs to ensure learning needs, outcomes, and competencies are being met and sustained within operations.
  • Responsible for collaboration with Long-Term Care management staff in the identification, development and support with delivery and tracking of; return to work, clinical remediation & new program specific education initiatives.
  • Organizes and maintains online education platforms (e.g. Surge learning) for all Long-Term Care Home staff.
  • Manage education of specialty programs, including mask fit testing, new hire orientation, student placements, coaching, and peer support.
  • Collaborate with senior management in best practice research to stay current with trends and developments in adult learning and Long-Term Care related training and equipment.
  • Collaborate with departmental managers and Continuous Quality Improvement Coordinator regarding policies and procedures to improve resident safety, efficiency, and process flow.
  • Provide staff education related to the implementation of new equipment and/or medical devices in collaboration with departmental leadership.
  • Provide quality data collection and timely and appropriate communication of performance metrics.
  • Provide input into education plans for review and approval by administrator.
  • Oversee staff orientation processes, and program evaluation across the Homes.
  • Prepare committee reports as required.
Learning and Development Functions:
  • In collaboration with the IPAC manager determine IPAC training requirements and address specific gaps through targeted education, auditing and remediation to ensure compliance with legislation, directives, policies and procedures.
  • In collaboration with the other long-term care departmental managers, research, plan, design, develop curriculum and deliver consistent learning plans, modules and staff evaluation in accordance with applicable guidelines, regulations, policies and procedures and other applicable legislation.
  • Develop and design customized training modules, using a variety of learning tools, for new and refresher/remediation courses.
  • In collaboration with departmental and quality managers, develop and regularly update training manuals and materials to reflect practice, program and legislative changes.
  • Ensure appropriate, quality education coordinated delivery with each of the 3 Homes management teams to ensure consistency across the homes.
  • Conduct gap and needs analysis
  • Seek cost-effective expertise within the local community to meet pre-determined training needs.
  • Act as a coach to staff.
  • Coordinate training sessions and set up training rooms and equipment as required.
Evaluation, Reporting and Research Activities:
  • Research and implement appropriate tools to evaluate the effectiveness of training programs; prepare summary reports on participant feedback; make recommendations or revisions, as required.
  • Audit/Observe frontline staff documentation, care delivery and infection control practices for compliance with standards, policies & procedures.
  • Utilization of the online learning management system and responsible for program reporting of; attendance and completion rates to management.
Liaison, Communication and Customer Service Activities:
  • Promote effective communication and work in co-operation with internal and external staff, management, and vendors.
  • Act as a program representative and participate on various internal and external committees, task forces and focus groups on adhoc basis.
  • Ensure that services provided meet customer service standards.
  • Provision of resident and essential caregiver education as required.
  • May include training outside regular business hours.
Other Duties:
  • Maintain current professional practice and knowledge of adult learning and development principles and application.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, in accordance with department objectives.
  • Follow all safe work practices and procedures and immediately communicate any activity or action which may constitute a risk to management.
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act in performing duties in a safe manner and follow all County of Elgin Health & Safety policies, procedures and legislation.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and the Personal Health Information Protection Act.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum two (2) years of long-term care sector experience.
  • Minimum one (1) year mentoring/teaching experience in health care environment.
  • Completion of a University degree/diploma in Adult Education, Leadership, Health Sciences, Registered Nurse, Registered Practical Nurse or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Completion of courses in adult learning theories and methodologies is an asset.
  • Training in occupational health and safety regulations is an asset.
  • Training in mental health first aid and peer support programs is an asset.
  • Experience with staff orientation, and development processes.
  • Mentoring and leadership abilities.
  • Excellent problem-solving, instructional, and presentation skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of computer software applications, including learning management systems, virtual education platforms, presentation software, MS Word, Excel, power point, off-the-shelf training packages and other office productivity tools.
  • Excellent prioritizing, time management, problem solving, communication and organization skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team player.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet commitments on a consistent and timely basis with changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, deliver & evaluate training programs and services.
  • Experience in infection, prevention and control projects or education an asset.
  • Excellent problem solving & instructional/presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of the legislation, guidelines and regulations as they relate to the position and responsibilities of the Long-Term Care sector.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in core competencies including customer service, communication, teamwork, initiative/self-management, accountability, flexibility and adaptability.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability using a variety of learning medium such as electronic presentation formats and technologies, integrated multimedia and on-line learning technologies, video conferencing and in-house classroom design.
  • Ability to work outside regular business hours, including evenings, nights and weekends, as required.
  • Must have access to a reliable vehicle to use on corporate business.
  • Valid driver's license and regular access to a reliable vehicle to perform duties.
