Senior Environmental Specialist

Reporting to the Waste and Water Lead, the Senior Environmental Specialist is responsible for the advancement of environmental excellence initiatives identified in NexGen's Environmental Assessment and Licence Commitments (e.g., Environmental Excellence Plan), from the Environmental Committees and other commitments under the Benefit Agreements, and those stemming from NexGen’s sustainability strategy. This role will work closely with internal stakeholders across the Compliance, Project Development, Environmental, and Sustainability teams.

Location

This position will be based in the Saskatoon Project Office or Vancouver Head Office with occasional trips to the Rook I Project site.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, evolve, and implement environmental excellence initiatives, including net-zero and climate adaptation planning, in a manner reflective of NexGen’s vision and values and in accordance with the Project’s regulatory context.
• Develop and implement NexGen’s research and development guideline and foster an innovation pipeline supporting NexGen’s technical practitioners to advance research and development opportunities.
• Identify and implement circular economy solutions into core business processes, including supply chain logistics and product lifecycle to reduce waste generation.
• Manage environmental excellence initiatives.
• Coordinate sustainability initiatives within the Environmental Department.
• Work collaboratively with the Project team on the development and implementation of Project-specific environmental plans, procedures, work instructions, guides, forms, etc. related to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions.
• Support the Waste Management Program for the construction and operations of the Project.
• Support site water management infrastructure detailed design activities.
• Support scopes of work related to waste and water for environmental excellence initiatives.
• Participate in meetings with Indigenous Nations, local communities, government agencies, and regulators to facilitate and support licensing, permitting and environmental management processes.
• Provide subject matter expert (“SME”) support and input in area of professional practice.
• Ongoing identification of environmental and sustainability risks and opportunities, leading mitigation planning activities.
• Stay well-informed of environmental legislation and sustainability initiatives and participate as necessary on working groups and associations.
• Other duties as required.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, or sustainability.
• 5-10 years of environmental or sustainability experience in mining or similar industry.
• Experience in uranium mining and milling is considered an asset.
• Experience applying structure decision making processes and tools is considered an asset.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with strong written and verbal communication abilities.
• Experience developing or deploying AI workflows, including agentic AI is considered an asset.
• Self-starter who takes accountability and ownership of work; capable of working collaboratively with a small team in a fast-paced growth environment and comfortable driving work to completion independently when required.
• Highly organized with the ability to balance multiple priorities while maintaining a high attention to detail.
• Strong digital literacy using Microsoft Office Suite and knowledge of database management.
• Developing and presenting compelling business cases that integrate non-financial considerations.
