POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager, Facilities Operations, the Supervisor, Facility Services (Mechanical & Plumbing) is responsible for the oversight of building systems, infrastructure, and maintenance operations across CHEO’s facilities. The Supervisor ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of services that support core operations, patient care, business continuity and compliance.

Working within a multidisciplinary environment, the Supervisor leads a team of unionized skilled trades staff and coordinates external service providers to deliver planned and corrective maintenance, support capital projects, and uphold compliance with all applicable healthcare facility regulations, standards, building codes, fire and life safety regulations, workplace occupational health and safety requirements, environmental regulations and healthcare accreditation standards.

The Supervisor manages inventory, enhances the use of the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and works closely with hospital interest-holders to ensure safe, functional, and compliant environment.

The Supervisor is responsible for enhancing operational efficiency, coordinating seasonal readiness, driving sustainability initiatives, and supporting the full lifecycle of equipment replacement, from strategic planning through commissioning and validation.

This full-time, on-site Supervisor holds a strong understanding of facilities operations, asset management, and interest-holders engagement, with the ability to adapt to evolving technologies, regulatory frameworks, and organizational priorities.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supervise, mentor, and evaluate mechanical and plumbing maintenance staff.
• Schedule daily work assignments and prioritize maintenance activities based on operational needs.
• Foster a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
• Coordinate emergency response for mechanical and plumbing system failures.
• Support staff training and professional development.
• Manage daily building systems operations, service requests and preventive maintenance (PM) through the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), ensuring safe, reliable and efficient performance.
• Coordinate shutdowns and urgent repairs with stakeholders to minimize patient care impact.
• Monitor system performance, identify issues early, and drive improvements in compliance, comfort, and sustainability.
• Ensure all operations meet healthcare codes and standards (OBC, OHSA, ESA, CSA, TIA, TSSA and Infection Control).
• Partner with clinical, IT, and project teams to align facility operations with organizational needs.
• Conduct daily walkthroughs of facilities to identify hazards, malfunctions, and service deficiencies, initiating timely corrective actions.
• Monitor shops and storage areas and maintain inventory of tools, parts, and materials to support daily operations.
• Oversee CHEO’s mechanical and plumbing and other related building systems.
• Implement preventive and corrective maintenance programs to maintain system reliability.
• Investigate failures, perform root cause analysis, and apply corrective/preventive actions.
• Maintain asset records, service histories, inspections, certifications, and system drawings in CMMS.
• Leverage data and analytics to support predictive maintenance and operational optimization.
• Conduct and support system audits, studies, assessments, and testing.
• Execute all mechanical and plumbing work and PM programs with the team on base building systems in alignment with applicable codes and standards.
• Ensure emergency preparedness and business continuity for critical utilities and base building systems.
• Oversee service providers for maintenance, repairs, and renovations, ensuring compliance with safety standards, service levels, and codes. Monitor service provider performance and provide corrective direction where required.
• Liaise with consultants, contractors, and stakeholders during projects and shutdowns to minimize disruption.
• Support capital projects by reviewing designs, overseeing commissioning, and integrating new systems into operations.
• Review and provide input on as-built documentation and single-line diagrams for accuracy, maintainability, and accessibility.
• Develop scopes of work, obtain quotes, and manage contract execution.
• Promote sustainability by aligning projects with environmental and lifecycle goals.
• Develop and enforce SOPs and standard work practices.
• Manage staff performance through evaluations, feedback, and corrective actions.
• Lead daily toolbox talks and shift handovers to reinforce safety and communicate priorities.
• Foster a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Participate in on-call rotations, deliver daily safety briefings, and support after-hours issue resolution, as required.
• Support emergency response, incident investigations, and business continuity planning.
• Provide supervisory coverage during colleague absences to maintain seamless operations.
• Perform all duties in accordance with the OHSA, related regulations, and all CHEO policies.
• Perform additional duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

• College diploma in a technical discipline related to building systems, engineering technology, or facilities management AND Certificate of qualification (Red Seal) from Skilled trades Ontario.
• Minimum five (5) years of hands-on facilities operations and maintenance experience. (Essential)
• Hands-on proficiency in mechanical and plumbing systems and infrastructure. (Essential)
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel between CHEO community sites as required. (Essential)
• Minimum Five (5+) years in a supervisory experience in a unionized environment. (Preferred)
• Background in healthcare or other large institutional facilities. (Preferred)
• Coursework in Energy or Facility Management (e.g., CEM, CEA, CSBO, CBCP, FMP, CFM) (Preferred)
• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. (Essential)
• Ability to read and interpret technical documentation including drawings, schematics, and single-line diagrams and manage operational workflows. (Essential)
• Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements including CSA, Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, and OHSA. (Essential)
• Experience coordinating contractors and managing projects in operational environments (Essential)
• Proficiency with CMMS (MRI Angus), Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and reporting tools (e.g., Power BI). (Preferred)
• Demonstrated ability to apply preventive maintenance programs, root cause analysis, and data analytics to optimize performance. (Preferred)
• Ability to support system and equipment upgrades and replacements projects through commissioning and handover. (Preferred)

Effective March 29, 2021, CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process.
