Senior Financial Accountant

The Senior Financial Accountant is responsible for full life-cycle accounting, guiding and supporting clients with the financial requirements, financial systems and reporting.
Prepare and review complex journal entries, account reconciliations, working papers, and financial analyses.
Lead and coordinate assigned components of the annual financial statement preparation process, including supporting schedules, note disclosures, and audit working papers.
Research, interpret, and apply Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) and relevant municipal finance requirements.
Analyze financial data and provide advice on accounting treatment, reporting implications, and internal control considerations.
Assist with the annual external audit process, including responding to audit inquiries and coordinating documentation requests.
Review general ledger activity and investigate variances, discrepancies, and unusual transactions.
Support capital, reserve, tangible capital asset, and other specialized accounting areas as assigned.
Provide technical guidance and support to finance staff and internal departments on accounting and financial reporting matters.
Participate in corporate and departmental projects related to financial systems, reporting improvements, and policy implementation.
Ensure compliance with City policies, internal controls, and applicable legislation and standards.

Thorough knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting practices, and internal controls.
Strong knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards; municipal accounting experience is highly desirable.
Sound understanding of financial statement preparation, audit support, account analysis, and reconciliations.
Ability to interpret legislation, accounting standards, policies, and procedures, and apply them in a municipal context.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines, especially during year-end and audit periods.
Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with enterprise financial systems and reporting tools.
Proficient with MS Office Suite (Excel, Outlook and Word).

Chartered Professional Accountant Designation (CPA)

This job is generally performed in an office environment.
