Jean Tweed is a leading, community-based organization that provides a supportive environment for women with substance use, mental health, and gambling concerns. Recognizing the diversity of women’s experience in today’s society, our programs seek to address a range of issues in a woman’s life that may contribute to substance use and gambling concerns.

The Jean Tweed Centre is building capacity to transform the level of support for women with substance use, mental health, and gambling concerns.

The Residential Counsellor is responsible for the overall safety of the residence and for creating and maintaining a safe and supportive environment for clients during their stay. This position includes supportive counselling, facilitation of evening activities, crisis intervention, conflict mediation, and facilitation of community meetings.

2 FT positions available (8-hour shift)

Saturday - Wednesday, 12:30am - 8:30am

How will you help to get us there?

As a Residential Counsellor, you will:

Support clients/residents at the residence in carrying out their treatment plan, and assist with daily routines.

Supervise and assist residents with any required medication where applicable.

Collaborate with supervisor to discuss job performance and establish professional goals.

Engage in ongoing staff development and personal learning as agreed to in performance reviews.

Monitor the progress of clients, prepare reports and letters as necessary.

Participate in staff meetings, team development and supervision meetings.

Conduct job responsibilities with a commitment to harm reduction, trauma- informed, women-centred and anti-oppressive practices.

Abide by the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and work in a manner that is safe, reporting incidents immediately to direct supervisor.

Adhere to the policies and procedures of The Jean Tweed Treatment Centre.

Support inclusion and equity by respecting others, embracing diversity and addressing oppression.

College Diploma in Addictions and Mental Health or equivalent qualification.

A combination of 3 years of work experience in the field of Mental Health, Substance Use, and/or Supportive Housing.

Expertise in providing supportive counselling and case management to individuals who are experiencing or have experienced a complex history of mental health concerns, and substance use.

Working knowledge of best practices in mental health, substance use, harm reduction, trauma and the therapeutic relationship.

Working knowledge of psycho-social rehabilitation and recovery principles.

Working knowledge of trauma-informed practice, women-centred principles and best practices for women and substance use.

Working knowledge of community resources such as health care.

Ability to work collaboratively in complex community settings.

Ability to use a range of technological tools, e.g. online reporting systems, videoconferencing etc.

Ability to work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision.

Excellent oral and writing skills.

First Aid/CPR certification.
