Climate Change Technical Specialist Location Yellowknife, NT : Department Information The mandate of the Department of Environment and Climate Change is to manage land, water, air, wildlife, and forests. This includes promoting, planning, and supporting the wise and sustainable use of natural resources, and protecting, restoring, and stewarding the environment for the social and economic benefit of all Northwest Territories residents.
Located in Yellowknife and reporting to the Senior Climate Change Scientist (Senior Scientist), the Climate Change Technical Specialist ensures that Department of Environment and Climate Change (ECC) obligations for calculating and reporting Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions are conducted accurately to demonstrate progress towards Government of the NWT emission reduction commitments. The Technical Specialist serves as the technical authority on landscape emissions, including efforts to develop and advance a pathway to enhance carbon storage through nature-based solutions.
Leads the monitoring, calculation, tracking, and maintenance of GNWT greenhouse gas emissions inventories and prepares documents to meet NWT and federal government reporting and performance tracking requirements.
Provides technical advice on the NWT carbon cycle processes and interpreting GHG emissions and actions to reduce emissions with a focus on landscape carbon management.
Develops, designs, coordinates and implements strategic assessment of climate change in environmental assessments and license applications and government decision making.
Works to implement Climate Change Knowledge priorities and supports the Climate Change Unit.
Completion of a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or related field, with at least two (2) years of related experience, preferably, at least one (1) year in GHG emission tracking, and/or relevant experience in an NWT setting with both government and private industry.
Relevant experience in an NWT setting with both government and private industry would include working with government / the GNWT and/or experience working with IGIOs, experience with climate change in a northern context.
