Job Summary In collaboration with the Director of the Centre for Blood Research (CBR), the Communications and Programs Coordinator will manage the branding and communications and research programs for the Centre for Blood Research (CBR). This will be accomplished by managing, coordinating and supporting a wide variety of print, web, video, social and electronic media projects to promote the research, education, and outreach activities at the Centre. The incumbent will also participate in fundraising initiatives led by the Director of the CBR. Organizational Status The CBR is UBC Senate approved, virtual, multidisciplinary, translational research centre, located at UBC. With its headquarters at the Life Sciences Centre on Point Grey campus, the CBR comprises approximately 35 groups led by principal investigators - fundamental scientists and clinicians - on campus and at the affiliated teaching hospitals (VGH, SPH, BCCH, BCCA). The position of Communications and Programs Coordinator reports to the Director of the CBR. This position will also interact with the various CBR faculty and staff and students, as well as other research centres, departments, institutes and units throughout UBC. Work Performed

• Designs, develops, and evolves integrated communications strategies and plans for the CBR creating, executing, and evaluating a content strategy and portfolio that includes websites, social media channels, digital signage, print communications, presentations, and e-newsletters.
• Researches, writes, edits and produces content for the CBR. Content includes material for websites, social media accounts, event announcements, magazines, flyers, brochures, e-newsletters, presentations, and signage. The primary focus of content is on research, education, and outreach activities. The audience will vary from within the research centre to other academic units, alumni, industry funders, community groups, and the general public.
• Manages the development, marketing and delivery of research, training and educational programs for CBR trainees and staff. Plans, develops and oversees trainee-related activities for three annual research symposia.
• Recommends content and areas for improvement of training programs for staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and undergraduate students affiliated with the CBR.
• Establishes partnerships with other related centres, departments, and organizations to organize new and collaborative research, training, education and outreach activates.
• Coordinates with the CBR Knowledge Translation Committee writers and editors to produce content for the CBR blog and magazine.
• Regularly reviews website content and design for effectiveness, quality, accuracy, consistency, and timeliness.
• Identifies opportunities to profile the expertise and unique aspects of the CBR and its members to enhance brand reputation at the local, national, and international levels and facilitates the execution.
• Assists with set-up of CBR seminars and events and takes photos at small CBR events and other activities.
• Carries out any other related duties as necessary.

Consequence of Error/Judgement Work is expected to be at a high level of accuracy with excellent attention to detail. Errors could seriously impair the public image of CBR and impact the reputation of the University. Lack of effort or poor judgement would result in lack of appropriate and timely information made public for faculty, staff and research trainees. Supervision Received Works independently regarding initiatives, consulting with the CBR Director and the CBR Office Manager. The incumbent is expected to take initiative, problem solve, determine course of action and follow through. Supervision Given This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. Minimum Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications A university degree in a relevant discipline such as communications, marketing, journalism, media/public relations, or a life science degree with coursework in communications-related areas is preferred. Experience in or understanding of life science research is an asset. Excellent traditional writing and grammatical skills including proven ability to write for the web, social media, brochures, and other communications channels and to adjust writing style for different audiences. Ability to engage and motivate students is a must. Ideal but not necessary, experience in marketing or fundraising. Experience in event planning and workshop facilitation. Demonstrated proficiency using multiple social media platforms including, but not limited to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Experience in web-based content management systems (WordPress or similar), web design, SEO, usability best practices, and analytics. Proficiency in email marketing systems (MailChimp or similar). Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign. Proven ability to work successfully and effectively with a wide range of groups and individuals, including researchers, colleagues, research trainees, community and media relations groups, and the public sector. Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher). Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to analyze problems, identify key information, and make decisions independently. Extreme attention to details and superior organization skills. Effective customer service skills. Ability to exercise a high level of tact, discretion, and judgement.
