About Us
The Nova Scotia Legislature, consisting of the Lieutenant Governor and the House of Assembly, is the legislative branch of the provincial Government of Nova Scotia, Canada, and is the oldest in Canada, having first sat in 1758. Nova Scotia has 56 Members in the House of Assembly (MLAs) representing 56 electoral districts. The House of Assembly meets in Province House, a National Historic Site and Canada’s oldest legislative building, located in downtown Halifax.
For information about the Legislature please visit "About the Legislature" at http://nslegislature.ca
About Our Opportunity
Legislative Pages hold a position in the province’s parliamentary system. Collaboratively working as a nonpartisan member of a team under the direction of House of Assembly Operations, Pages support the day-to-day functions of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. Pages prepare for daily House sittings and provide a range of services to assist the Speaker, MLAs, Table Officers and legislative divisions to facilitate the smooth operation of the House of Assembly.
Becoming a Legislative Page provides an excellent opportunity to make use of professional communications skills, organizational and hospitality skills. Pages witness MLAs debating, amending, and passing legislation and see first-hand how Nova Scotia’s legislative body works to serve Nova Scotians.
When the House of Assembly is sitting, Pages work both on the floor of the House of Assembly and behind the scenes. As the daily routine unfolds and Legislative Television broadcasts the proceedings on television and on the internet, Pages, working in shifts, undertake a variety of duties including: setting up the House for daily routine; responding to and coordinating requests from the Speaker, MLAs and Table Officers; collecting and distributing documents, messages and supplies within and outside the Legislative Chamber; setting up rooms and providing hospitality through the non-alcoholic beverage service in the Legislative Chamber and committee meetings, collecting and cleaning glassware, dishes and cutlery for re-stocking.
When the House is not sitting, Pages set up rooms within the legislature’s building, Province House, for committee meetings and other functions and events. This may include routine duties such as organizing the non-alcoholic beverage service, setting up tables and chairs, and clearing up.
Qualifications and Experience
- Enrolled as a part-time or full-time student in a post secondary education program (Career College, Community College or University) or recent graduate within the last 2 years.
- Experience working a frontline service in the hospitality sector or in customer service.
- Maintain confidentiality during and outside of proceedings, and a high degree of professionalism in a non-partisan support role.
- Exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with MLAs and staff in a politically sensitive environment.
- Demonstrate dependability, flexibility and teamwork in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to focus and remain at an assigned post for prolonged periods of time.
- Must be able to place priority on attending the legislature (3-4 shifts per week when in session).
- Knowledge of the Nova Scotia Legislature is considered an asset.
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: standardized tests, interview(s), and reference checks.
Working Conditions
This is a casual appointment commencing September 1st, 2026, to August 31st, 2027. Successful candidates may be renewed for one additional year of service as a casual employee, for a maximum of two years when all Legislative Pages must exit the program.
Legislative Pages are employed on a casual basis and working in shifts of four hours (occasionally two shifts back-to-back). Legislative Pages must be available to work a minimum of 3-4 shifts per week when the House of Assembly is sitting, with at least two of those shifts being from Noon until 4:00pm on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Pages generally work on weekdays only, in the Spring and Fall, and on an as-needed basis when the House is not sitting the rest of the year. Pages must be able to work flexible hours. Some lifting and carrying of heavy objects are required. Routinely, Legislative Pages stand for long periods, climb stairs and some hours will be spent sitting at a reception desk.

In your cover letter please explain how you hope to benefit from serving as a Legislative Page. Only applicants with both a resume and cover letter will be considered.
