Schedule: Open Availability (Monday – Sunday, including weekends and holidays) 

Compensation: $25/hour+ depending on qualifications and experience

Position Summary 

We are actively seeking a solid leader to manage day-to-day operations in our production kitchen.  Our hybrid food service model is unique, as it serves two very different purposes, 1) city-wide catering on the for profit side which financially supports our non-profit food security operations, and 2) brilliantly upcycling meals to reduce unnecessary food waste, while feeding our marginalized community members with kindness, dignity and respect. This is a hands-on leadership role for a Chef (Red Seal or Experienced), who must have experience leading a large-scale catering, or commissary-style operation.  The ideal candidate will also have a well-intentioned humanitarian heart for the community, and the ability to foster a safe, respectful, and empowering kitchen environment for our staff. 

Key Responsibilities 

• Lead the production of at minimum 5000+ meals weekly for catering and food production needs, community outreach meals, and emergency disaster relief support(seasonal). 
• Supervise and support kitchen staff, volunteers, and individuals with employment barriers
• Ensure consistency, food safety, and portion control in all meal prep and packaging
• Oversee inventory, place food orders, and manage vendor relationships 
• Coordinate with CHU's leadership and logistics teams to meet daily and weekly delivery targets
• Maintain high sanitation standards and ensure compliance with food safety regulations
• Train staff on commercial kitchen equipment and procedures 
• Promote a respectful and inclusive kitchen environment rooted in CHU’s organizational values
• Help team members obtain industry certifications and build job-readiness skills

Required Qualifications 

• Minimum Red Seal Chef OR 5+ years experience a Kitchen Management role
• 3+ years experience managing a high-volume kitchen or high volume catering operation 
• Valid Food Handler’s Certificate (or willing to obtain before starting) 
• Valid Driver’s License and access to reliable vehicle 
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays 
• Physically able to stand for the duration of your shifts, with repetitive bending, crouching, lifting, and carrying, must be able to lift 50 lbs and perform hands-on kitchen duties with ease and confidence
• Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills 
• Comfortable working with people from diverse and vulnerable backgrounds (community minded)

Assets (Preferred but Not Required) 

• 
  Experience working in a social enterprise or community kitchen 
• Lived experience related to CHU’s mission (e.g., food insecurity, overcoming barriers)
• Familiarity with Indigenous cultural practices and teachings (we offer opportunities to learn as well)
• Training in trauma-informed or harm-reduction care models
