Senior Counsel, Personal Banking E-Commerce & Retail Products

What you’ll be doing

As Senior Counsel, Personal Banking, you’ll provide centralized legal advice within the Legal Department on e-commerce laws, including AI related regulations and codes, and offer seamless advice in relation to these matters in the context of client contracts, including terms, conditions, and disclosures. You will also provide legal advice on personal banking products and processes such as lending or deposits, tokenized deposits, debit cards, Interac e-Transfer, overdraft services, and the legislation and regulatory requirements that apply to them.

How you’ll succeed

• Provide legal advice – Deliver proactive, practical legal advice grounded in the Bank Act, consumer protection legislation, and applicable codes of conduct.
• Support Personal Banking products and services – Negotiate, draft, and advise on legal and regulatory matters while mitigating risk.
• Track and communicate AI and e-commerce law developments – Monitor regulatory changes and advise on emerging issues.
• Research and analysis – Prepare clear legal opinions and present recommendations.
• Product and service development support – Identify legal considerations early, assess risks, and provide mitigation strategies.
• Build partnerships – Maintain relationships with business lines and partner with Communications, Compliance, Risk, and other functional teams.
• Collaborate across teams – Work with Legal colleagues, share knowledge, and engage external counsel as needed.

Who you are

• Certified professional – called to the Bar in Ontario, member in good standing.
• At least six years of related experience, including significant experience at a top-tier law firm or major corporation in corporate or commercial law.
• Experience with federal statutes such as the Bank Act or Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation Act, provincial or territorial consumer protection legislation, and deposit products.
• Strong legal and analytical judgment; ability to investigate complex issues and provide actionable advice.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to convey nuanced legal guidance.
• Driven to make an impact, innovative, and proactive in identifying opportunities and risks.
• Values of trust, teamwork, and accountability.
