Advanced Education supports Albertans by providing the education and training opportunities they need to prepare for the workforce. This is accomplished by: approving programs of study; funding public post-secondary institutions and other adult learning providers; providing financial aid for learners; registering and certifying apprentices; and, supporting academic research and innovation.
Programs and services are driven by 3 outcomes: (1) Adult learning opportunities are accessible and affordable for all Albertans; (2) High-quality education, skills development and research make a positive contribution to Alberta's economy, society, culture and environment; and, (3) The adult learning system is accountable and coordinated.
Role Responsibilities
The Ministry of Advanced Education has an exciting opportunity and is looking for an AIT Officer to join our team! The Apprenticeship and Industry Training Officer (AIT Officer) plays a key role in promoting and administering Apprenticeship and Industry Training programs and all related activities. The AIT Officer reports to the area supervisor and is considered a specialist in at least one or more trades, with broad based knowledge in several other related trades. The position provides advice and assistance to employers and employees on training and certification in designated trades, promotes apprenticeship training and careers in designated trades and monitors the workplace for appropriate on-the-job training and compliance with the Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act and regulations. Supports the work of My Skilled Trades Network, administers and invigilates exams, and provides liaison and support to the colleges/technical institutes that provide apprenticeship technical training. In your role as an AIT Officer, you will be responsible for:
- Administer the Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act and regulations in the assigned area under the guidance and supervision of the area supervisor.
- Respond to client inquiries and concerns regarding apprenticeship training, certification in designated trades and other matters related to the apprenticeship and industry training system, and troubleshoot issues and complaints from area clients.
- Monitor trade shops and construction sites through site visits to check working and learning environment, wage rates and adherence to training requirements.
- Issue compliance orders where required, and support the efforts of Government to enforce compliance with the Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act and regulations.
- Monitor apprenticeship examinations ensuring integrity and security.
- Assist the examination institute Liaison Officer and/or area or area supervisor with the coordination and invigilation of industry examinations (both theory and practical) at area colleges/technical institutes, training centres, Aboriginal communities and other locations.
- Provide appropriate support for individuals that may require individual exam accommodations.
- Effective and proactive liaison with public/community, employers, other departments and local training institutions.
- Promote the apprenticeship and industry training system to industry, business associations, trade groups, Aboriginal communities, and other distinct communities.
- Act as a resource to instructional staff in the colleges and technical institutes that deliver apprenticeship training to provide technical and/or professional advice in their respective fields or areas of expertise

Qualifications
Minimum Recruitment Standard:
- Depending on the discipline:
- Journeyperson level certification and 4 years related experience at the Journeyperson level; or
- Two Journeyperson level certifications and 2 years related experience at the Journeyperson level; or
- Alberta Occupational Certificate and 7 years related experience; or
- Related diploma and 4 years related experience.
Knowledge and/or experience of the following are considered Assets for this position:
- Red Seal endorsement
- Formal apprenticeship program leading to a journeyperson level certification
- Experience with public speaking
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office
- Experience with Dispute Resolution
