What role will you play in our team
We have Environmental Student positions available at multiple locations. At each location the Environmental and Regulatory Student is responsible for supporting the Environment and Regulatory teams ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and approvals and supporting implementation of the company’s environmental strategy.
Positions are available at multiple locations including Calgary, Cold Lake, and our Kearl Oils Sands Mine. Note that our Kearl site is located north of Fort McMurray and will be on rotation with either a 14 days on and 14 days off schedule or a 4 days on 3 days off schedule, flying in and out of Calgary or Edmonton.
What you will do
The Environment and Regulatory Student will support an operation by completing regulatory analyses, maintaining existing regulatory compliance systems, and ensuring compliance with internal and external reporting requirements. The position will keep up-to-date with assigned regulations and support ExxonMobil Advocacy staff to drive reasonable rulemaking and interpretations. Actual job role could vary based on experience and knowledge of candidate(s). The position is located at the supported site.
- Providing environmental/engineering advice on environmental aspects to support the day-to-day operations in one or more of the following areas:
- Air management including air emissions, inventories and modelling
- Water management including chemical and physical hydrology and hydrogeology
- Waste management
- Ecology including wildlife, biodiversity and vegetation management
- Spill prevention and response
- Advise on environmental and regulatory requirements and collaborate to implement cost-effective solutions
- Execute day-to-day Environment, Climate and Regulatory practices, programs, data management and reporting including Operations Integrity Management System (OIMS); provide training and support to operations, including learnings from incidents
- Support environmental business planning, permitting, and environmental impact assessment processes
- Build and engage the network to effectively support compliance assurance systems
- Identify non-conformances with key Environment, Climate and Regulatory practices and systems, and support implementation of corrective actions
- Monitor compliance with Environment, Climate and Regulatory standards
About you
Skills & Qualifications:
- Completion of at least 2nd year or higher in Engineering with an Environmental / Civil major or designation, Environmental Sciences, or Environmental Management degree
- Currently enrolled in a university program and returning to full-time studies after the work term
- Most recent unofficial transcript(s) must be submitted with your application
- Demonstrated leadership skills
- Effective communication skills
- Organizational leadership skills
- Strong computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Work, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong detail orientation
- Strong business ethics
- A valid driver's license and a safe driving record are required for this site-based positions
Preferred Qualifications/Experience:
- Previous industry or environmental experience is considered beneficial, but not essential
- Ability to adapt to challenging projects, working in a high pace and often changing work environment
- Self-motivation with strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Critical thinking skills and ability to problem solve
Start date: January 3, 2027
Work Term: 12 months (preferred, would consider 8 or 16 months)
