Job Description:

Note: The start date for the positions is May 2027. The length of the term is 12-16 months until August 2027.

As a Co-op Student, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and develop a broad range of skills through meaningful work assignments, mentorship, training, and exposure to real-world projects.

Through these placements, students will gain insight into the power systems industry while contributing to meaningful work that supports Alberta’s electrical transmission system.

AltaLink is hiring Co-op Students who are eager to apply their academic learning in a professional environment and gain exposure to the utility industry. Successful candidates will have opportunities to build technical and professional skills, collaborate with experienced industry professionals, and contribute to key initiatives within the business. Placement will depend on the successful candidate’s education, skills, interests, and business needs.

There are 10 Co-Op roles available in AltaLink’s Projects and Operations teams :

Operations:

1) Lifecycle Maintenance Engineers

2) Operational Engineering

3) System Operations

4) OT Operations

5) Compliance Operations

Projects:

6) Project Engineering

7) Project Development

Successful candidates will join one of seven specialized areas within AltaLink’s Operations and Project teams, based on their education, skills, interests and business needs.

Responsibilities:

Lifecycle Maintenance Engineering : Under the supervision of the Manager, Lifecycle Maintenance Engineering, the individual will be part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team responsible for supporting engineering data analysis, automation, modeling, risk analytics and reporting on AltaLink’s transmission facilities in Alberta, which range from 69kV to 500kV.

Operational Engineering: Under the supervision of the Manager, Operational Engineering, the individual will be part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team responsible for supporting issues on AltaLink’s transmission facilities in Alberta, which range in voltage class from 69kV to 500kV. The successful candidate will be providing support in one or more of the technical sub-groups such as transmission lines, civil, substations, SCADA, protection and control (P&C), and compliance.

System Operations : Under the supervision of the Manager, System Operations, the individual will assist the team in identifying and developing solutions to power system operational issues to ensure the safe, efficient and reliable real-time operation of AltaLink's transmission system.

This involves performing and evaluating power system studies, undertaking system impact and risk management studies for maintenance and project integration activities, developing contingency plans and providing technical support to AltaLink's Control Centre.

OT Operations : Under the supervision of the Manager, OT Operations, this individual will support AltaLink’s operational network and EMS (Energy Management System) infrastructure. This includes opportunities to work in networking and MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) systems, OT/EMS infrastructure and applications, and to support compliance activities.

Compliance Operations: The individual will support AltaLink's compliance program by assisting with regulatory, operational, and asset compliance activities across AltaLink's transmission system. The successful candidate will work closely with engineering, operations, maintenance, and compliance teams to support the monitoring, tracking, analysis, and reporting of compliance obligations.

Project Development: Under the supervision of the Manager, Project Development, the successful candidate(s) will assist the team in developing these projects, managing the portfolio reports, leading the project through governance meetings, meeting with customers to understand requirements and document accountabilities, and also preparing cost estimates and risk evaluations in conjunction with team members.

Project Engineering: Under the supervision of the Manager, Engineering, this individual will support Engineering design, power system studies and material specification management. This individual will also provide project support to projects in development and execution.

Qualifications:

• An Electrical Engineering student who has completed two or more years of study and is enrolled in a Co-Op/Internship program at a recognized University.
• Working knowledge of MS Office: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
• Knowledge of electrical transmission facilities (substations, civil, lines, P&C and SCADA) would be an asset.
• Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills.
• Experience with Microsoft Office: TEAMS, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Dedicated team player with strong interpersonal and communications skills.
• Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage a wide variety of issues simultaneously and meet strict deadlines.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes.
• Proven track record of good attendance and job performance.
