Department: Acute Recreational Therapy

The Recreation Therapist is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of therapeutic recreation services that promote patient engagement in support of patients’ functional abilities, independence, and overall well-being. Working collaboratively as part of the interprofessional team, the Recreation Therapist contributes to patient-centered care, supports safe and timely transitions, and helps optimize quality of life across the continuum of care.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certification/Experience/Knowledge:

• Degree in Therapeutic Recreation required. Candidates with diploma in Recreation Therapy who have relevant, current related experience will also be considered and are encouraged to apply
• Minimum 4 years recent experience in an acute care, clinical, and/or rehabilitation setting required
• Experience adapting therapeutic recreation interventions for clients with physical, cognitive, and psychosocial impairments required
• Experience working with older adults, including dementia, delirium, and responsive behaviours, preferred
• Experience working within an interprofessional team, including collaboration on discharge planning, required
• Current CPR/BLS and First Aid Certification required
• Current certification in Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) required
• Current membership with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO) preferred
• Certification through National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (CTRS) preferred
• Knowledge of age-related changes, chronic disease management, senior-friendly care principles, and falls prevention required
• Preference will be given to applicants with additional Senior Friendly training (e.g., DementiAbility)

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively within an interprofessional healthcare team
• Strong clinical judgment with the ability to assess patients, develop individualized care plans with measurable goals, and implement and evaluate therapeutic recreation interventions aligned with functional outcomes
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical environment, with strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize competing demands
• Demonstrated flexibility, adaptability, and resourcefulness in delivering patient-centered care across diverse clinical settings
• Skilled in communicating and engaging with patients experiencing a range of cognitive, communication, behavioural, and motivational challenges, including those with complex communication needs and responsive behaviours
• Commitment to a patient-centered approach that promotes dignity, engagement, and meaningful therapeutic participation
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including safe patient handling, transfers, mobility support, carrying equipment and supplies, and travel between units as required
• Proficient computer skills, including clinical documentation and use of electronic health records
• Demonstrated commitment to workplace health and safety, including maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff, volunteers, and visitors, and contributing to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse events
• Proven reliability, professionalism, and consistent attendance record
• Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.
