Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING

• High School Diploma is required; a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, laboratory science or in a related field is preferred.

EXPERIENCE

• Three years of experience in laboratory operations, including chemical preparation, equipment set-up and maintenance, and comprehensive waste management is required. This includes expertise in handling hazardous materials, implementing safety protocols, and adhering to established safety procedures to ensure a secure and efficient laboratory environment.
• Familiarity with managing student laboratory needs and maintaining lab safety protocols is required.
• Knowledge of safety regulations, WHMIS and hazardous materials protocols is required.
• Experience in a university, research or laboratory setting is preferred.
• An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Strong organizational skills and proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams are required.
• Good manual dexterity and excellent eyesight are required to accurately perform weight and volume measurements, as well as minor equipment repairs.
• Flexibility is required to adapt to varying tasks and priorities.
• A high level of accuracy is required in both written and manual tasks.
• Effective communication skills are required.
• The ability to manage multiple competing needs and requests while effectively coordinating priorities and interacting with a variety of individuals is required.
• The ability to establish and maintain positive, cooperative relationships with all staff and students is necessary required.
• Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality is required.

Key responsibilities

Laboratory Operations and Safety Management

• Prepare and dispense significant quantities of reagents, and standard solutions punctually for each experiment. Ensure all laboratory bottles, including those containing concentrated acids, bases, and solvents are adequately filled.
• Set up, clean, test, calibrate, and turn on equipment used for experiments, including pH meters, water baths, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, chromatography and electrophoresis equipment, ovens, balances and hotplates.
• Clean each lab room after every lab period and experiment, return unused chemicals and supplies to the storeroom, ensure all containers are securely closed, and confirm lockers are locked.
• Ensure acidic waste is properly neutralized and all flammable, corrosive, or toxic chemicals are handled according to standard safety procedures.
• Ensure all volatile and hazardous chemical solutions are stored in fume hoods, following WHMIS regulations.
• Respond promptly and safely to chemical spills and broken glassware incidents.
• Perform daily management of chemical waste in the teaching laboratories, ensuring proper handling, segregation, and timely removal in accordance with safety protocols and regulatory standards
• Repair lockers and locks as required, restock paper towel dispensers, soap containers, and miscellaneous lab supplies. Clean fume hood cupboards, sinks and other laboratory areas, ensuring that lab bench tops are tidy and ready for use, with primary cleaning tasks managed by caretakers.
• Routinely inspect fume hood fans, water taps, vacuum lines, and gas lines. Report maintenance issues to the Administrative Assistant or Physical Plant.
• Ensure all laboratory equipment is thoroughly cleaned and maintained in optimal working conditions. Perform minor repairs when feasible or coordinate professional repair services as required.
• Clean and organize storeroom shelves and drawers to maintain an orderly and efficient workspace.
• Maintain up-to-date Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) as required by WHMIS regulations.
• Perform an annual inventory of chemicals and supplies to determine requirements for the upcoming year and inform the main storekeeper for necessary purchases.
• Serve as Fire Warden/ Emergency Response for the floor ensuring, preparedness, and response to emergencies.

Laboratory Support and Resource Coordination

• During lab periods, provide support by replacing broken or lost equipment, dispensing special equipment, refilling reagents, and administering first aid as needed.
• Assist with lab reorganization due to changes in enrolment, schedules, or experiments, and support operations during another lab steward’s absence to ensure continuity.
• Assist students during lab sessions by promptly replacing broken or lost equipment, dispensing specialized equipment, refilling reagents, and administering first aid when necessary, ensuring a safe and uninterrupted learning environment.
• Assist in scheduling make-up labs for students who missed a session, when appropriate.
• Stock, assign and maintain individual student equipment lockers.
• Ensure lockers are checked, cleaned and restocked with necessary equipment before classes start.
• Track locker assignments and ensure they are cleaned at the end of the term, notifying the Administrative Assistant of any unreturned items.
• Assign lockers to students during the first week of laboratory sessions and as needed throughout the term, ensuring an organized and efficient process for equipment storage.
• Procure necessary chemicals, glassware, and supplies from Main Stores to sustain adequate inventory levels for laboratory operations and maintain accurate records of inventory transactions.
• Report any special needs, such as new equipment or supplies to the Administrative Assistant.
• Maintain an inventory of major laboratory equipment and keep records of loans to students or staff.
• Perform other related duties that will be assigned by the immediate supervisor.
