Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer and responsible to the Treasurer of the Board of Directors, the Director of Finance is responsible for managing all financial matters and for the provision of strategic advice and analysis to support the development of fiscal and operational plans.  Working within a not-for-profit charitable sector with a unionized model, supported by municipal, provincial, federal and philanthropic funding sources and their reporting and auditing requirements is required.



Responsibilities in this role will include:



Strategic/Leadership:

• Participating on the Executive and Management Teams; contributing to annual business planning, strategic planning and corporate initiatives.
• Ensuring the vision is clearly linked to short and long-term goals which are clearly linked to the daily work of staff; identifying and implementing strategies, policies, programs and standards to achieve Shelter Nova Scotia vision and goals and develop a culture that enhances the organization’s ability to attract and retain quality employees and achieve operational success; prioritizing work in clear alignment with Shelter Nova Scotia business goals and making decisions in the context of the organization and its environment.
• Developing and fostering a team approach to finance by coaching, mentoring and teaching nonfinancial managers.

Finance and Accounting:

• Working with the Board, Chief Executive Officer and management teams to establish the annual operating budget and the capital budget and processes for reporting.
• Participating in and supporting the activities of the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee of the Board through the Board Treasurer.
• Ensuring the timely submission of all reports and forms in compliance with Canada Revenue Agency and other statutory requirements.
• Maintaining accounting records of revenue and disbursements (including payroll); submitting regular financial statements to the Board and providing financial reports to funders.
• Preparing information for and ensuring compliance with the annual audit.

Business Processes and Resources:

• With the Executive Team, identifying ways for effective cost savings across the organization.
• Reviewing business processes and practices and making recommendations for change.
• Mentoring co-workers on best-practice business processes.
• Overseeing the accounting and finance team.

The ideal candidate will possess:

• CPA designation.
• Minimum 5 years of related experience.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access).
• Experience with Financial Edge NXT accounting software considered an asset.
