The Ernest C. Drury School for the Deaf is a community-based bilingual/bicultural School for the Deaf, under the Ministry of Education, Provincial and Demonstration Schools Branch, with the tradition and reputation for meeting the academic, language, cultural and social needs of Deaf or Hard of Hearing children.

The student lodging program is an extension of the school program for students who do not live close enough to access daily transportation. Academic and student lodging programs support each other in the provision of a comprehensive curriculum.

Job term: 1 Temporary Seasonal position (September to June recurring).
Salary: $30.68 – $33.94 per hour (as per the OPSEU Collective Agreement).

About the job

As Team Leader you will:

• Provide group leadership and technical expertise to student support counsellors and school staff;
• Plan and monitor routines of students in a student lodging setting;
• Coordinate timetables for lodging staff;
• Plan, organize and implement appropriate programs for students;
• Perform duties as a Team Lead.

Mandatory requirements

• Post-secondary educational program or equivalent training and experience in a child care related field;
• Current certification in CPR and Standard First Aid;
• Crisis Prevention and Intervention training / Behaviour Management Systems training or equivalent.

Skills and qualifications

• Experience working with students who are deaf;
• Demonstrated ability to facilitate effective social, recreational and leisure programs geared to meet the needs of deaf students;
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with individuals in a lodging setting;
• Team skills: to lead, coach and problem solve, and to deal effectively and efficiently with crisis situations;
• Ability to interpret and apply knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, procedures, guidelines and practices related to the health and welfare of students;
• Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and other professionals in English and American Sign Language (ASL);
• Sound judgement, problem solving, analytical and organizational skills;
• Ability and willingness to assist students with personal hygiene and lift weights up to sixteen (16) kg;
• Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team;
• Willingness and ability to work shifts.
