Position Summary

The Career Development Centre reports jointly to Student Affairs and Teaching & Learning and engages students and alumni in their career development as an integral part of the Laurier experience. This encompasses delivery of comprehensive programs and services that support experiential learning, career decision-making, employment preparation, facilitation of connections with the employer community, and pursuit of further education opportunities. Specific programs and services include: individual consultation and workshops on career planning, resumé writing, job search strategies, interview skills and further education; a Career Resource Centre; comprehensive employment services for full-time, summer and part-time opportunities for students and alumni; volunteerism; career-integrated learning in conjunction with campus partners; online resources; numerous events such as career panels, employment recruiting sessions, Job Fairs, Further Education Fair and Laurier Experience Record.

Reporting to the Associate Director, Career Development & External Relations, the Further Education and Employment Consultant is accountable for providing further education and employment consulting with students and alumni for the Waterloo campus. This includes the provision of career information and assistance with graduate and professional school applications; consulting on and review of applications, CVs/resumés and personal statements; assisting students and alumni with developing effective job search strategies, networking and interview skills; and developing and presenting related workshops. The incumbent will also develop print/electronic resources to assist students and alumni in their educational planning.

This position has a university-wide mandate and is based at the Waterloo Campus. The incumbent provides subject matter expertise to all campuses, requiring regular interpersonal interactions and collaboration with departments at the Waterloo Campus, the Brantford Campus, the Milton Campus and external partners. Special attention is given to ensure equitable service delivery across all locations.

Accountabilities

Further Education Advising Accountabilities

• Advises students and alumni on an individual basis, primarily regarding further education information and career information including graduate and professional schools such as law, teaching, medicine, research-based programs, rehabilitation sciences, post-degree college certificates, etc., both nationally and internationally
• Assesses client needs regarding applying for further education programs
• Critiques further education applications including personal statements/letters of intent, CVs/resumés and autobiographical sketches on an individual basis as well as advising students and alumni regarding disclosure of personal information including disability, diversity and life experiences
• Provides graduate admission test information to students and alumni including strategies for preparation and success
• Provides information on program choices, admission requirements, deadline dates and other details related to graduate and professional school applications
• Advises students and alumni about reference letters including how to ask for strong letters
• Answers student and alumni questions regarding further education and career information via email. This includes email correspondence, which is detailed, significant in length and ongoing.
• Acts as primary departmental resource on further education consulting, ensuring other team members are equipped with relevant resources, information and training to provide services on a back-up basis and during the summer months
• Creates and presents workshops and presentations related to further education
• Develops print/electronic resources to assist students and alumni in their educational planning
• Reviews and recommends changes to educational planning content on the departmental website
• Engages with Laurier faculty and staff to promote further education advising services at the Career Centre and to build relationships for program development
• Participates in the planning and execution of the annual Graduate and Professional Education Fair and the Teacher Education Information Sessions

Employment Consulting

• Critiques job application material and advises students and alumni on format, language and relevant content
• Assists students and alumni in identifying appropriate references
• Conducts mock interviews and provides interview coaching
• Researches and provides students with relevant job search resources (electronic and print) related to their field(s) of interest
• Instructs students on the development of networking skills (including professional etiquette) and informational interviewing techniques and strategies
• Answers student and alumni questions regarding job applications, job search strategies and interview skills via email. This includes email correspondence, which is detailed, significant in length and ongoing.
• Assesses student and alumni needs regarding career decision-making and makes appropriate referrals to other departmental services
• Develops and delivers workshops related to resumé and cover letter writing, job search, networking, etiquette, and interview skills
• Organizes and participates in outreach events such as the delivery of ‘resumé blitzes’ on campus
• Co-ordinates, develops and conducts special events and workshops on topics related to employment, including sessions related to various career areas and/or fields of study

Other Related Duties

• Participates in departmental activities, i.e., staff meetings, graduate survey tracking, Convocation
• Participates in the joint Job Fairs held annually and hosted by University of Guelph, University of Waterloo, Conestoga College and Laurier
• Participates as a team member within the department, e.g., assisting in other departmental areas as required, participating in departmental professional development activities and departmental special events
• Performs other duties as assigned

Professional Development

• Ongoing learning through the review of graduate programs, admission requirements and application procedures. This role requires the incumbent to stay up to date with changes to graduate and professional programs across Canada as well as international programs.
• Ongoing learning related to the development of expertise in tools, resources and strategies for effective job search

Qualifications

• Master’s degree plus 2 years related experience in the field of further education and employment advising
• Training or experience in basic counselling techniques
• Knowledge of labour market trends and employment standards
• Knowledge of the employer community (knowledge of both local and national markets)
• Excellent written (including editing) and verbal communication skills
• Experience in providing one-on-one advising services
• Demonstrated ability to deliver presentations
• Well-developed organizational skills
• Detail-oriented and a high degree of accuracy in the performance of all tasks
• Strong technical skills (Microsoft Office Suite) 

Hours of Work

This is a full-time, limited term, recurring position with an approximate end date of May 21, 2027. The normal hours of work are 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. The incumbent is required to work an alternating evening schedule on Wednesdays from 11:00am to 7:00pm. Occasionally flexibility in hours may be required, including evening and/or weekend work due to special Career Centre events. When possible, the manager will adjust the work schedule so that no more than 35 hours are worked in a week. This position is subject to a 12 week lay-off period from mid-May to mid-August each year.

This role offers limited flexibility regarding flexible work arrangements. Please see Policy 8.14 (Flexible Work Policy) for more information. All arrangement must be approved by the direct manager. On occasion, this schedule may need to be adjusted to meet operational requirements.

Compensation:

Level: E

Rate of pay: $42.83 to $45.28 per hour with an annual step progression on anniversary date up to $48.95 per hour.

Considerations for new hire step placements include, qualifications and length/depth of required experience, relevant market rates for similar jobs, internal equity, and estimated learning curve in starting the job.
