FRQ Chair in Extinction Events and Paleoenvironments of Anticosti Island

Located in the heart of Quebec City, Université Laval is a comprehensive university recognized for its culture of excellence in teaching and research.

Anticosti Island is one of the world's most important geological sites for studying the Late Ordovician geology and associated mass extinction, thanks to the exceptional quality of its sedimentary and paleontological records.

The successful candidate will be awarded the FRQ Chair in Extinction and Paleoenvironments of Anticosti Island, which will enable the pursuit of cutting-edge studies to better understand past climatic and oceanic dynamics, thereby enhancing understanding of current changes and anticipating future ones.

Position Description

The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering is seeking individuals with strong research expertise in stratigraphy, sedimentology, and/or paleontology.

The selected candidate will teach within the department's programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, develop a funded and innovative research program complementary to the strengths of our programs.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development and visibility of a research program dedicated to studying Anticosti Island’s geological and paleontological records, working within a dynamic scientific environment involving numerous national and international collaborations.

Position Responsibilities:

• Teaching and supervision of students at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
• Research and publication in the fields related to the position;
• Participation in pedagogical and administrative activities of the department and faculty;
• Participation in activities that contribute to the visibility of the faculty and the University.

Selection Criteria:

• Hold a bachelor’s degree in geology or another relevant Earth sciences program and a doctorate in a discipline relevant to the teaching and research domain of the position, or be close to obtaining a doctorate (thesis submitted);
• Relevant scientific training and experience in the targeted domain;
• Demonstrated ability to conduct university-level research;
• Potential to develop autonomous and innovative research activities in the relevant domain;
• Demonstrated or potential abilities for university teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, for supervising graduate students, and committed to the continuous improvement of teaching material;
• Demonstrated commitment to service to the associated community;
• As Université Laval is a French-language institution, the successful candidate must be able to provide quality teaching in French or commit to doing so within a maximum of three years.

Appointment and Salary

The salary will be determined according to the collective agreement in effect at the time of hiring.

Additional Information

The department consists of a team of 13 professors supervising about 150 undergraduate and over 80 graduate students. Research in the department is structured around four themes: geomaterials, mineral resources, natural risk analysis, and hydrogeology.
