Course Description:
The Option Seminar provides [third year Engineering Science] students with an introduction to their upper-year discipline of study, and encourages students to consider different educational and career pathways. Students will participate in sessions with other students from their Option/Major, with a focus on research and industry directions and the relationship between the Option/Major and it’s social & environmental context. Students will also participate in program-wide seminars which feature opportunities for career exploration. This course is offered on a credit/no credit basis, and students receive credit for attending sessions and completing a small set written deliverables.

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must hold at minimum a Master's Degree in Engineering, English or a related discipline to be eligible for this role.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to instructors who have a PhD in Engineering or English and have experience teaching professional communication (both oral and written) in an engineering setting.
Past teaching within the Engineering Science curriculum is an asset. Applicants should highlight any experience providing constructive feedback on both written and oral assignments in an engineering setting, as well as leading a teaching team and/or calibrating grading of open-ended assignments.
Finally, strong professional communication skills to effectively engage alumni and other guest speakers, coordinate a team of other faculty, and deliver engaging and meaningful seminars is an asset.
Responsibilities:
The Sessional Lecturer will be responsible for planning and facilitating 12 (total) hour-long Program-Wide Seminars throughout the academic year, as well as supporting and coordinating 8 other seminar series run by the EngSci Major Chairs (one for each Engineering Science Major). Planning and facilitating the Program-Wide series includes preparing materials and delivering seminars, recruiting EngSci alumni and other guests to act as seminar speakers and panelists, moderating panel discussions, tracking student attendance at seminars, as well as introducing, running and assessing two CR/NCR assignments throughout the year. TA support is offered to support assessment as well as assignment administration. Coordinating the Major-Specific seminar series involves communicating with the 8 Major Chairs about expectations for the series, assisting Chairs in recruiting speakers (as necessary) and referring to resources to recruit alumni, as well as compiling attendance records for Major-Specific seminars. The instructor is responsible for making a final determination of CR or NCR for each student based on their (Program-Wide and Major-Specific) seminar attendance and performance on the two course assignments. This course will be taught in-person.
Duties of this position shall be performed at the campus on which the position is located.
