Director Health Safety

Fireweed Metals is seeking a strategic and hands-on Director, Health & Safety to lead and evolve our safety framework across exploration, drilling, camp, and early-stage project development activities in remote northern Canada.
Reporting to the VP, Projects & Evaluations, this role will be instrumental in shaping a proactive safety culture as we transition from exploration toward development. You will design scalable systems, ensure regulatory compliance, and support safe, efficient field operations across a multi-contractor environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead H&S Strategy : Develop and implement a scalable Health & Safety Management System aligned with regulatory requirements and industry best practices
- Build Safety Culture : Champion visible, practical safety leadership across field and corporate teams
- Risk Management : Identify and manage critical risks across exploration, drilling, construction, aviation, and camp operations
- Regulatory Compliance : Ensure adherence to all applicable legislation in Yukon and NWT; lead audits and regulatory engagements
- Field Leadership : Conduct site visits, inspections, and coaching to support safe field executio
- Incident Management : Lead investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions to drive continuous improvement
- Contractor Oversight : Establish and manage contractor safety standards, onboarding, and performance monitoring
- Emergency Preparedness : Develop and maintain response plans for remote and high-risk environment
- Occupational Health : Oversee programs including fatigue, hygiene, exposure monitoring, and mental health awareness
Qualifications
- 10+ years’ progressive H&S experience in mining, exploration, construction, or resource development
- Proven experience building and implementing safety systems i n junior mining or project development environment
- Strong knowledge o f northern Canadian regulatory framework
- Experience supportin g remote field operations and camp-based work
- Demonstrated leadership i n incident investigations, risk management, and contractor safety
- Excellent communication, influencing, and stakeholder engagement skills
- Relevant degree (H&S, Engineering, Environmental or similar
- Professional designation (CRSP, NCSO, NEBOSH, ISO 45001) considered an asset
Work Environment & Travel
- Vancouver-based with regular travel to Yukon and NWT sites
- Field season rotation (May–Oct ): 2 weeks site / 1 week off / 1 week in-office
- Off-season (Nov–Apr ): primarily office-based
- Remote travel via small aircraft, helicopter, and winter roads
