Sessional Lecturer: IMI2995H – Special Topics in Urban Innovation - Urban Analytics: Data, Methods, Mapping, and Visualization 

The Institute for Management and Innovation’s Master of Urban Innovation has the following Sessional Lecturer position available for the Winter 2027 term and invites applications from suitably qualified candidates who are not current University of Toronto students.  No late applications can be considered.

Course Title: IMI2995H – Special Topics in Urban Innovation - Urban Analytics: Data, Methods, Mapping, and Visualization 

Class Schedule: Mondays, 2PM - 5PM 

Dates of Appointment: January 1st, 2027 – April 30th, 2027 

Description of Course: This course introduces students to foundational and intermediate methods in urban data analytics, visualization, and storytelling. Through hands-on learning and the use of real-world urban datasets, students will develop practical skills in collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and communicating data through maps, visualizations, and compelling narratives. This course aims to equip students with the confidence and skills to apply data-driven approaches to urban challenges. 

Position Description: All normal duties related to the design, teaching and delivery of a University credit course including: weekly lectures. Meeting with student teams to guide/advise them on their assignments. Holding weekly office hours. Marking/evaluating all student assignments; recording student attendance; recording and submitting grades; and communicating with students on course related matters. Building and maintaining Quercus course shell. Design course syllabus, content and assignments in close consultation with Program Director. Liaise with Program Director regarding course content and curriculum. 

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. (Geography, Urban Planning, Data Science or related field). Demonstrated expertise in urban data analytics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial analysis, data visualization, and the application of data-driven methods to urban research and policy. Experience teaching or developing courses, workshops, or professional training in subject matter with an ability to communicate technical concepts to students with varying levels of experience.  

Preferred Qualifications: Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the Collective Agreement. 

Salary (half course): Minimum $9997.47 as per CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement (includes 4% vacation pay).
