Head of School

Job Responsibility:

Maria Montessori School (MMS) is seeking an enthusiastic Head of School (HOS). MMS is an established non-profit Montessori-based, pre-school and kindergarten with a current student population of approximately 70. Our children range in age from 18 months to 6yrs. The MMS HOS serves as the director of the school, reporting to the Board of Governors and overseeing the day-to-day operations of MMS.

The HOS is required to put the best interests of our children first, while balancing them with the responsibilities of the board, the expectations of our parents and needs of our staff. The HOS will work collaboratively with the MMS board, staff and parents to drive, promote and fulfill our vision to provide children in Saskatoon an opportunity to grow and thrive in an enriching and exemplary early learning environment based on the philosophy and work of Maria Montessori.

It is critical that our HOS is committed to providing and promoting the Montessori method of education as our core pedagogy, while being open to adopting aspects of other successful learning approaches. For instance, integrating developmentally appropriate play-based programming into MMS programming in alignment with Play and Exploration: Early Learning Program Guide is also required.

Excellence in role requires that the Head of School build strong, healthy relationships with a diverse set of individuals and organizations. This will require working collaboratively to:·

• Prioritize the fulfillment of our commitments to the children (our students)
• Lead, manage, coach, and nurture all members of the school staff
• Communicate effectively with parents and the community, under a variety of circumstances
• Work progressively with the MMS Board to set and achieve our goals
• Create and foster positive working relationships with administrators and staff from City Park School, the Saskatoon Public School Division, the Early Years Branch of the Ministry of Education, and other external parties who work with us
• Oversee and ultimately be accountable for all school administrative responsibilities
• Apply leading practices regarding Human Resources management at the school, in accordance with respective laws and codes

The HOS is expected to fulfill the duties and expectations of a child care centre director as required by Saskatchewan' Child Care Act (2014), Child Care Regulations (2015), and the Early Years Branch of the Ministry of Education. Child Care Regulations (2015) require a centre director to manage daily operations, with the required skills, knowledge and competencies to provide appropriate environments for children. Centre directors are employed by, and accountable to, the centre's Board, who are legally responsible for the centre. The Board approves policies for the centre and determines the director's specific role in centre operations. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for scheduling, curriculum development (following provincial requirements), extracurricular activities, personnel management, emergency procedures, budgeting, and operations oversight.

Eligible candidates must:

• Possess an ECE Level III recognized by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education or exemption
• Provide a criminal record search, including a vulnerable sector check
• Possess, or be willing to acquire: Emergency child care first aid and CPR certification, FoodSafeTM certification
• Already possess status (such as Canadian citizenship or permanent residency) to legally work in Canada
• Be able to maintain professional standards of excellence for her/himself and others, guided by the Early Learning and Child Care Director guidelines
• Be able to manage all Human Resources related needs of the school effectively, and in so doing, must understand and adhere to Saskatchewan Employment Standards including, but not limited to, The Saskatchewan Employment Act.
• Have the ability to maintain respectful relationships and confidentiality in all dealings
• Possess strong written and oral communication skills

Highly desirable skills/requirements include:

• 5 or more years early learning and child care experience - pre-K / Kindergarten is an asset
• Familiarity with the education system
• Comprehensive knowledge of play based, child-directed learning
• Familiarity with Montessori learning pedagogy and application in an early childhood setting
• Ability to engage easily at all levels/ages and desire to work collaboratively - proactive around marketing and promoting the school
• Experience working with a non-profit Board of Directors
• Leadership, supervisory and administrative experience
