Specialty RN Training Opportunity - Critical Care
West Coast General Hospital (WCGH) – Port Alberni, BC V9Y 4S1, Canada (Primary)
Job Description
This position provides a full‑time training opportunity (theory and practicum) to prepare staff for a full‑time rotation in the Specialty department. Upon completion, staff will be placed in a regular full‑time position within the trained specialty.
Key Responsibilities
Reports to the Nurse Manager, Department Head, or designate.
- Plans and provides direct nursing care to patients/residents in the hospital or community in accordance with unit/program philosophy, competency guidelines, policies, and BCCNM Standards for Nursing Practice.
- Supports continuous improvement of quality and safety throughout all aspects of the role.
Qualifications
Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practising RN registrant, with recent related medical and/or surgical experience.
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to organize workload and set priorities.
- Ability to deal effectively with internal and external contacts (co‑workers, physicians, community agency representatives, patients, residents, families).
- Physical ability to perform duties of the position.
Training Program Details
- Distance pre‑requisite course: complete online courses (BCIT NSCC 7120 Theory 1, NSCC 7150 / Mosby ECG with PLAR credit or acceptable alternative) by end of August 2026.
- Full‑time compressed timeframe training, September – December 2026: theory and clinical courses completion; Island Health sponsors tuition, books, and paid release from current job for full‑time student status.
