Employment Counsellor / Employer Liaison

The EDGE Skills Centre is a community-based, full-service group of programs located in, dedicated to serving the employment and educational needs of adults in the community. Through language training, academic upgrading, and employment skills training, participants are prepared to meet the challenges of the new millennium.

We are currently seeking an dynamic and motivated Employment Counsellor / Employer Liaison to join our team and support participants in the EDGE Career Program.

Job Background

The Employment Counsellor / Employer Liaison is responsible for preparing participants for workplace success through career exploration, individualized employment counselling, and employability workshops. This position also develops and maintains strong relationships with employers to create work experience, placement, and employment opportunities for EDGE Career Program participants.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

Employment Counselling

• Deliver employability skills training in areas such as career exploration, job search strategies, self-marketing, workplace communication, and workplace success.

• Identify barriers to employment and support participants in developing job readiness skills, effective job search strategies, resumes, cover letters, and interview preparation skills.

• Assess participant skills, work experience, employment goals, and career interests to support effective employment planning.

• Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with participants to review progress and provide ongoing guidance.

• Assist participants in developing and implementing individualized action plans.

• Provide ongoing employment support, follow-up, and retention assistance.

• Assist with participant recruitment, intake, interview, and selection processes.

• Network with employment-focused organizations, community partners, and service providers.

• Attend employment-related events, training sessions, and community activities.

• Assist with the development of program promotional and information materials.

• Maintain accurate participant records and complete data entry in the SPRS database.

• Participate in ongoing curriculum development and program improvement initiatives.

Employer Liaison

• Develop and maintain strong relationships with employers across various sectors to expand employment opportunities for program participants.
• Identify employer needs and develop partnerships that support work placements, job opportunities, and long-term employment outcomes.

• Source and secure work experience, workplace placement, and on-the-job training opportunities.

• Organize, coordinate, and monitor work placements while maintaining communication with employers and participants.

• Work with employers to identify required skills and support the transition of placements into permanent employment opportunities.

• Maintain current knowledge of Winnipeg's labour market, industry trends, employer needs, and skills gaps.

• Support effective job matching by connecting participant skills and career goals with available employment opportunities.

• Provide job search support, employer communication, and interview preparation assistance.

• Maintain accurate and up-to-date employer databases and participant records.

• Ensure timely completion of required reports and documentation in accordance with funder requirements.

• Assist with other program responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

• Degree or diploma in Career Development, Human Resources, Social Sciences, Education, Business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Minimum two years of experience in employment counselling, career development, recruitment, workforce development, or a related field.

• Experience working with unemployed adults, newcomers, individuals receiving

Employment and Income Assistance (EIA), or individuals facing barriers to employment is considered an asset.

• Experience developing employer relationships, business partnerships, or job development activities is an asset.

• Strong knowledge of the local labour market, current hiring practices, job search strategies, and employment trends.

• Knowledge of issues and barriers affecting newcomers, low-income earners, and individuals receiving income assistance.

• Ability to plan, develop, and deliver employment-related workshops and training using adult learning principles.

• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.

• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accurate documentation.

• Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.

• Experience working with individuals from diverse cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

• Experience with SPRS or similar client management databases is considered an asset.
