Job Description
Are you ready to take on a challenging and rewarding role that encompasses multiple parts of the perinatal journey? As a Nurse Practitioner in Mount Sinai Hospital's Women's and Infants' Health program, you'll experience a unique rotation between Labor & Delivery triage and postpartum care. This is a unique opportunity enabling you to rotate between these two areas, which will hone your skills in clinical assessment, fetal monitoring, and comprehensive patient education. With our renowned high-risk obstetrical program, you'll also have the chance to manage complex cases and develop specialized skills, setting you apart as a leader in the field of women's and infants’ health.
Is this you?
You are energized by the distinct rhythms of both Labor & Delivery triage and postpartum care. You are adept at shifting gears between the fast-paced demands of triage — where quick assessment, clear communication, and decisive action are paramount — and the more intimate setting of postpartum recovery, where patient education, emotional support, and a keen eye for detail are essential. You are empathetic and compassionate, enabling you to build trust and rapport, fostering a supportive environment for women and infants during vulnerable times.
You are a natural leader, eager to take initiative and contribute to positive education and mentorship within a dynamic clinical setting. Your teaching and mentorship skills will sharpen as you educate staff and patients, supervise advanced nursing students, and engage in professional development activities.
You approach challenges with a solutions-oriented mindset and are excited by the prospect of shaping the future of our women's and infants' health team. Here, you will play a crucial role in maintaining and improving patient care standards, focusing on preventing and managing obstetrical complications. These leadership abilities will prove essential for any candidate who is considering a path towards administrative or managerial roles within health care.
About our Women’s and Infants’ Health Team
Mount Sinai Hospital’s Frances Bloomberg Centre for Women’s and Infants’ Health has forged a path to become the largest academic centre for women’s health in Canada. Our multidisciplinary teams specialize in high-risk pregnancy, with two-thirds of the pregnancies we care for each year considered to be high-risk. For 100 years, Mount Sinai has proudly delivered babies, supporting more than 7,000 births each year. The Family Integrated Care (FICare) program developed at Mount Sinai Hospital empowers caregivers to play an active role in caring for their preterm infant in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and has been shown to help improve the well‑being of both infants and their families.
In this role you will
- Conduct assessment of patients presenting to Labor and Delivery Triage, including a comprehensive history (BPMH), and physical examination.
- Function within current OTAS guidelines and policies, facilitating timely medical review of OTAS1 or OTAS2.
- Order and interpret diagnostic testing and imaging as required.
- Formulate an appropriate and safe care plan and ensure comprehensive communication with the patient and care team.
- Complete referrals to multidisciplinary teams, as required.
- Conduct assessments and interpretations of fetal health surveillance monitoring (continuous fetal heart rate monitoring) as per the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) guidelines and MSH learning module.
- Provide postpartum care including monitoring the patients' physical and emotional well‑being, managing common postpartum issues such as lactation and recovery, and educating patients and families on care essentials.
- Manage wound care for surgical sites or episiotomies, ensuring proper healing, preventing infection, and providing patient education on wound care at home.
- Discharge patients as per existing MSH medical directives or if ordered by staff MD following review.
- Participate in the programmatic development of the clinical area and provide guidance.
- Interpret and foster the philosophy, goals, and standards of the Department of Nursing and Department of Obstetrics.
- Act as a resource and serve as a consultant to individuals and groups within the professional community.
Job Requirements
Mandatory
- Successful completion of a Master’s Degree program in nursing and a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Certificate from a CNO accredited academic institution or equivalent combined education and experience.
- Current registration (extended class) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Eligible for cross‑appointment to an academic institution.
- Experience in high‑risk labour and delivery.
Preferred
- Demonstrated experience and skills in a Nurse Practitioner role.
- Membership in Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) and other organizations relevant to the role.
- Demonstrated experience through roles of advanced practitioner, educator, researcher and administration/leadership.
Skills and Knowledge
- Demonstrated customer service skills and ability to sensitively communicate with patients/families in vulnerable situations.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and customer services skills.
- Excellent organization, time management, program planning and evaluation skills.
- Demonstrated decision making, problem recognition/solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Proven commitment to collaborative practice and ability to work effectively independently and within an interdisciplinary team in a fast‑paced environment.
