Job Title: SCADA & Protection Relay Test Engineer

Location: Markham, ON

Duration: 6 months (potentially extendable)

Responsibilities

SCADA & Grid Automation

• Configure and test SCADA and distribution automation systems, including gateways, RTUs, and controllers.
• Participate in SCADA system design and architecture, including:
• Designing SCADA systems.
• Creating and reviewing network and system architecture diagrams.
• Configuring communication parameters and device settings.
• Configure and validate SCADA communications (DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850) to ensure proper data acquisition, alarms, controls, and status reporting.
• Perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis of SCADA system issues, communication failures, and integration defects.

Protection Relay Testing (Supporting Activities)

• Support the testing and validation of protection relays in a lab/validation environment.
• Execute secondary injection tests using industry-standard tools to:
• Verify relay logic, settings, and response times.
• Validate correct protection behavior.
• Review relay settings and assist in resolving protection or coordination issues identified during testing.

Quality & Collaboration

• Capture logs, analyze abnormal behavior, and log defects using defect tracking tools.
• Track defects through investigation and resolution.
• Follow established QA methodologies and validation procedures.
• Participate in weekly technical and project meetings with lead engineers and project managers.

Skills & Qualifications

• 4-5 years of experience in SCADA configuration and testing.
• Hands‑on experience with Grid Automation platforms (e.g., gateways, RTUs, controllers).
• Experience with competitor equipment (e.g., third‑party controllers).
• Strong knowledge of SCADA communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850).
• Experience in troubleshooting and defect tracking.
• Knowledge of power systems and electrical substations.
• Strong communication, collaboration, analytical, and critical‑thinking skills.

Nice‑to‑Haves (Protection Relay Testing)

• 4-5 years of hands‑on experience testing protection relays.
• Experience with secondary injection tools (e.g., Omicron, Doble, Megger, Freja, RTS systems).
• Experience in the utilities sector (generation, transmission, distribution).

Tools & Software

• SCADA and Grid Automation platforms.
• Communication protocols: IEC 61850 (GOOSE, Buffered & Unbuffered Reports), DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870‑5‑103.
• Defect tracking and test management tools.
• Basic networking knowledge (switches, VLANs, routers).
