Responsibilities

• Answer inquiries regarding STRP plan provisions.
• Manage the STRP general email account and provide responses and direction to members.
• Apply understanding of STRP’s relationship within the STF and with external teaching partners to guide members to other benefit plans, Senior Administrative Staff, or Superannuated Teachers of Saskatchewan to ensure members are aware of available resources.
• Meet with members individually to explain benefit eligibility and options under the Plan Text, and provide explanations of pension legislation and the impact of each option.
• Respond with a detailed explanation to members regarding any requests or calculations that are not eligible under the Plan or have been restricted by provincial or federal legislation.
• Calculate spousal relationship breakdown values and provide correspondence on requirements for a marriage settlement payout request and its impact on the member’s pension.
• Evaluate member eligibility for benefit entitlements and other optional pension transactions such as purchases of service, transfers to other pension plans, etc.
• Attend to complicated pension calculations that require analysis of the member’s complex situations, interpretation and application of plan rules, policies and applicable legislation.
• Research and investigate atypical Plan situations, present case analysis and solutions to team lead and plan manager.
• Consistently review system-generated calculation results to ensure the pension benefits are administered correctly and in accordance with the Plan Text and applicable legislation.
• Peer review calculations and option statements performed by another pension specialist or a pension technician for accuracy and compliance.
• Triage incoming member requests and optimize workflow by reviewing member files to determine applicable deadlines and urgency.
• Liaise and build relationships with other pension plan authorities that participate in reciprocal agreements.
• Work with school divisions on problematic member data issues.
• Train, mentor, and coach junior pension technicians and pension technicians.
• Maintain the Specialist Policy and Procedures manual to keep it current and complete.
• Develop and provide group pension presentations.
• Create and develop statistical reports for internal analysis and management reporting.
• Continually review plan operations and internal processes with team lead and plan manager to incorporate efficiencies.
• Assist in the development, composition, and review of various communication materials to ensure they are up-to-date and accurate.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in economics, commerce, or a related field with 3–4 years of pension, benefit, or total reward experience; equivalent combination of education and experience also considered.
• Established interpersonal skills in dealing with members, employees at all organizational levels, and officials of other organizations.
• Proficiency in Excel and Word.
• Strong arithmetic and mathematical skills.
• Experience and/or training in an automated pension administration system.
• Ability to interpret and apply plan legislation, text, and policies.
• Knowledge of total rewards principles, techniques, and practices.
• High work standards and mature judgment.
• High degree of initiative and motivation.
• Ability to work effectively as a team member.
• Organizational skills.
• Possession of a Pension Plan Administration Certificate or equivalent is a strong asset; if not held, the successful candidate will be required to obtain it.
