Role Summary
This is a unique opportunity to lead Canadian Tire Bank’s Enterprise Risk Management function while helping build and mature the Bank’s next generation Financial Risk Management capabilities. Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer, the AVP, Enterprise & Financial Risk Management is responsible for leading Canadian Tire Bank’s Enterprise Risk Management function while establishing and maturing the Bank’s Financial Risk Management oversight capabilities. The role provides independent oversight and challenge of the Bank’s overall risk profile, including credit, capital, liquidity, interest rate, strategic, model and emerging risks. Working closely with Executive Leadership, Finance, Treasury and business partners, the incumbent will ensure risks are appropriately identified, measured, monitored, managed and reported in alignment with the Bank’s Risk Appetite Framework, strategic objectives and regulatory expectations. The AVP plays a key role in supporting Executive and Board decision-making through risk governance, forward‑looking risk analysis, stress testing, capital and liquidity oversight, regulatory engagement and independent challenge. This is a builder role requiring a leader who is equally comfortable shaping strategy, influencing executives and personally developing the frameworks, oversight programs, testing approaches and governance structures needed to establish and mature the Bank’s Financial Risk Management capability.
What You’ll Do
Enterprise Risk Leadership Lead the design, implementation and continuous enhancement of the Enterprise Risk Management Framework. Maintain an independent and holistic view of the Bank’s risk profile across financial and non‑financial risks. Provide thought leadership and effective challenge to Executive Management on material risk-taking decisions, strategic initiatives and emerging risks. Provide independent risk assessments and challenge for material strategic initiatives, new products, portfolio strategies, partnerships and business transformation activities. Own, maintain and continuously enhance the Bank’s Board‑approved Risk Appetite Framework, including risk appetite measures, limits, triggers, reporting and breach escalation. Lead the ongoing development of enterprise risk governance, risk assessment processes and reporting practices.
Financial Risk Management Development & Oversight Establish and mature the Bank’s second‑line Financial Risk Management oversight capability. Lead the development and implementation of frameworks, policies, standards, governance processes and reporting for capital, liquidity, interest rate, stress testing and other financial risks. Build foundational Financial Risk Management practices where capabilities are emerging or not yet fully developed. Partner with Treasury, Finance, Credit Risk and business leaders to establish effective monitoring, challenge and governance processes. Develop risk appetite metrics, key risk indicators, limits and reporting for material financial risks. Lead the development and maturation of enterprise stress testing frameworks, methodologies, governance and reporting practices. Provide independent review and challenge of capital adequacy, liquidity sufficiency, stress testing assumptions, scenarios, methodologies and outputs. Develop and execute a strategic roadmap for the evolution of Financial Risk Management capabilities, governance, resources and operating model. Operate effectively in both strategic and hands‑on capacities, personally driving the development of new risk management capabilities and deliverables as required.
Credit Risk Oversight & Model Risk Management Lead the independent second‑line oversight and challenge of retail credit risk strategies, underwriting standards, account management practices, collections strategies and portfolio performance. Review and challenge credit risk policies, risk appetite metrics, portfolio segmentation methodologies and key assumptions used in credit risk measurement and monitoring. Establish and maintain a comprehensive second‑line Credit Risk Oversight Program, including thematic reviews, targeted testing, issue validation, root cause analysis and monitoring of management action plans. Design and execute risk‑based oversight reviews and testing programs to assess the effectiveness of first‑line credit risk controls, processes and adherence to approved policies and standards. Conduct independent assessments of credit risk management activities to identify control weaknesses, emerging risks, policy exceptions and opportunities for enhancement. Support the continued development of model governance and oversight practices across the Bank, including independent review and challenge of material models, methodologies and assumptions used in credit risk, stress testing, forecasting and capital planning.
Capital, Liquidity & Interest Rate Risk Oversight Provide independent oversight and challenge of capital management, ICAAP, liquidity risk management and recovery planning activities. Review and challenge capital forecasts, stress testing outputs and capital management strategies. Oversee liquidity risk monitoring, contingency funding planning and related governance processes. Challenge methodologies, assumptions and risk reporting associated with Interest Rate Risk in the Banking Book, or IRRBB. Assess the Bank’s resilience under adverse scenarios and emerging economic conditions.
Regulatory, Executive & Board Engagement Ensure risk management frameworks remain aligned with OSFI expectations, industry practices and evolving regulatory requirements. Lead the preparation and coordination of enterprise and financial risk reporting for Executive Management, the Audit & Risk Management Committee and the Board of Directors. Present risk assessments, emerging risks, stress testing results and risk appetite reporting to Executive Management, Board Committees and the Board, as appropriate. Support the CRO in Board and Committee engagement activities, providing independent analysis, insights and challenge on material risk matters. Support regulatory reviews, examinations, audits and independent assessments. Build and maintain effective working relationships with senior executives and key stakeholders across the organization.
Leadership Build, mentor and develop a high‑performing Enterprise Risk Management and Financial Risk Management team, identifying future capability, talent and resource needs as the function matures. Foster a strong risk culture that promotes accountability, transparency and prudent risk‑taking. Lead the governance and administration of the Enterprise Management Committee, ensuring effective agenda management, risk reporting, issue escalation, action tracking and executive‑level discussion of the Bank’s key risk exposures, emerging risks and risk management practices. Lead through influence and execution, establishing credibility through both strategic leadership and hands‑on delivery. Serve as a key leadership partner to the CRO and provide leadership support on risk matters as required.
What You’ll Bring
Experience 10+ years of progressive experience in risk management within a regulated financial institution. Significant experience in Enterprise Risk Management, Financial Risk Management, Credit Risk, Treasury Risk, Capital Management or Regulatory Risk Management. Demonstrated experience building, implementing or significantly enhancing risk management frameworks, oversight programs, governance processes and reporting capabilities. Proven ability to operate effectively in a build‑and‑transform environment, balancing strategic leadership with hands‑on execution. Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders, drive organizational change and build credibility across business, Finance, Treasury and Risk functions. Experience interacting with prudential regulators and external stakeholders. Experience presenting complex risk matters to Executive Committees, Board Committees and senior leadership teams.
Technical Expertise Strong knowledge of Enterprise Risk Management frameworks, risk governance practices and Risk Appetite Frameworks. Deep understanding of one or more financial risk disciplines, including credit risk, capital management, liquidity risk, stress testing, recovery planning, treasury risk management or IRRBB. Strong understanding of ICAAP, capital adequacy and liquidity management principles. Working knowledge of model governance principles and the ability to effectively challenge model assumptions, methodologies and outputs. Strong understanding of OSFI regulatory expectations and risk governance requirements.
Education & Designations Undergraduate degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Business or a related discipline. Graduate degree considered an asset. Professional designation such as FRM, CFA, CPA, PRM or equivalent preferred.
