Economic Strategy and Investment (ESI) Division

Role Responsibilities
The Ministry of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as a Senior Industry Development Officer!
This position supports the Supply Chain, Logistics, and Construction team and undertakes research, analysis and project coordination activities to inform strategic decision-making by senior leadership and affected stakeholders related to economic policy and strategy development.
Reporting to the Manager, the Senior Industry Development Officer provides strategic analysis, research, and advice to support evidence-based decision-making related to economic policy, industry development, and ministry priorities. The incumbent gathers, evaluates, and synthesizes information from a wide range of sources to identify trends, issues, risks, and opportunities that may impact Alberta's economy and priority sectors.
The role requires strong analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills to assess complex issues, develop recommendations, and provide timely information to senior leadership and stakeholders. The position is responsible for conducting research, environmental scanning, stakeholder engagement, project coordination, and the development, collection, analysis, evaluation, and dissemination of economic, industry, and business climate information. The incumbent supports policy, strategy, and program development by providing objective, substantiated, and reliable analysis on emerging issues and opportunities.
In your role as a Senior Industry Development Officer, you will:
- Prepare action requests and briefings in response to Premier/Minister/Deputy Minister/Assistant Deputy Minister requests using individual research and coordinating input from other branches and subject matter experts.
- Respond to department briefing requirements and stakeholder information requests in support of key ministry outcomes related to industry growth, job creation and investment.
- Research, analyze and prepare reports, position papers and recommendations for decision-makers on issues with industry development implications to inform policy, strategy and program development in the Ministry of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration, and in other Government of Alberta ministries whose policies impact industry development.
- Identify and assess emerging issues, risks and opportunities through analysis of quantitative data, industry intelligence and stakeholder feedback, and develop recommendations to support strategic decision-making.
- Conduct ongoing environmental scans and jurisdictional research to identify emerging trends, policy developments, opportunities, and risks relevant to ministry priorities.
- Identify significant economic shifts, emerging issues and identify those that may have an impact on Alberta's economy and priority sectors.
- Coordinate with government partners and monitor cross-ministry initiatives to identify opportunities, risks and potential impacts on industry development priorities and stakeholder relationships
- Analyze and communicate jurisdictional best practices, policy approaches and industry development trends to support continuous improvement and evidence-based policy and program development.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Business, Economics, Arts, Public Administration, Political Science or other related fields plus 4 years progressively related experience.
Equivalencies may be considered as listed below:
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education; or
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience.
The following knowledge or experiences are considered as assets:
Required:
- Research, analysis and critical thinking skills to assess economic and industry issues.
- Strong writing skills to prepare briefings, action requests, reports and recommendations.
- Effective stakeholder engagement, communication and relationship-building abilities.
- Project coordination and organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Experience analyzing quantitative and qualitative data from multiple sources.
- Ability to conduct environmental scans and identify emerging trends and risks.
- Sound judgment, political acuity and attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Assets:
- Strong ability to synthesize information from multiple sources, identify trends, risks, and opportunities, and develop evidence-based recommendations.
- Experience in analysis and analysis of complex ecosystems in inputs, industry development, understanding economic policy, strategic planning or stakeholder relations.
- Experience preparing executive briefings, ministerial correspondence or strategic reports for Senior Management.
- Experience working with industry associations, businesses and government partners.
- Understanding economic indicators, labor market trends and investment issues.
- Experience in supply chain and logistics, and construction assets.
