Plant Operations Supervisor/Technologist

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide advanced leadership and coordination of production operations to achieve company objectives for safety, quality, productivity, reliability, and continuous improvement.
2. Responsible for fostering and enforcing a strong culture of safety, environmental compliance, and operational discipline, including proactive hazard identification and mitigation.
3. Accountable to the Production Manager for production, shipping, bagging, and operational coordination activities within the Plant.
4. Provide leadership coverage during off‑hours (nights, weekends, holidays), including real‑time response to plant upsets, outages, and emergency situations.
5. Provide technical and operational support across production, maintenance, and automation functions, including acting as a backup resource for production and automation leadership when required.
6. Carry out special assignments as directed by the Production Manager or Senior Management in support of the Company’s business needs.
7. Provide backup coverage for the Production Manager, including operational decision‑making, coordination with other departments, and acting as the primary contact for production issues during holidays or absences.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Operations

1. Issue and provide all necessary orders and direction to hourly personnel to meet production, shipping, and bagging schedules.
2. Monitor calcining and related operations to ensure safe, efficient, and optimized production performance.
3. Organize and manage bagging plans and coordinate product availability and shipping requirements with Sales.
4. Record and report daily product inventories, production statistics, and shift information.
5. Maintain detailed shift logs, daily payroll documentation, and operational records.
6. Provide absence coverage for other Production Supervisors as required and maintain working knowledge of their responsibilities.
7. Act as backup to the Production Manager during absences, vacations, or off‑hours situations, providing operational leadership and decision‑making support.

Safety, Compliance & Emergency Response

1. Ensure enforcement of all Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety, and WHMIS regulations and maintain high housekeeping standards.
2. Implement government regulations pertaining to Environment, Occupational Health & Safety, and WHMIS, submitting required reports to regulatory agencies as directed.
3. Promote and maintain compliance with lockout/tagout (LOTOTO) protocols as a member of the Lockout/Tagout group.
4. Record, investigate, and document all accidents, near misses, and equipment damage, and submit findings to the Production Manager.
5. Participate in and support safety investigations, including proactive hazard identification and corrective action development.
6. Conduct weekly toolbox meetings and monthly crew safety meetings; record and submit minutes to the Plant Safety Committee.
7. Conduct annual mobile equipment operator evaluations.
8. Maintain training and annual review of safe work procedures.
9. Initiate Drug and Alcohol testing as required in accordance with Company policy and regulatory requirements.
10. Serve as a trained member of the Plant Emergency Response and Rescue Team.

Training & Competency Development

1. Train employees on job functions, standard operating procedures, and safe work practices.
2. Train and document newly hired employees and employees transferred to new positions in applicable safety and operational procedures.
3. Evaluate training effectiveness and employee competency on assigned tasks.
4. Assist with training and onboarding of new Production Supervisors.
5. Gather operational information, photos, and feedback for training module development; review training materials with operators and provide feedback to developers.

Maintenance, Reliability & Technical Support

1. Initiate Work Orders for equipment repairs and follow up with the Maintenance group to ensure timely completion.
2. Cooperate with Maintenance to ensure machinery and equipment repairs are coordinated with production schedules.
3. Assist with vibration analysis, troubleshooting, and reliability‑focused maintenance activities.
4. Conduct shutdown internal inspections and perform internal process measurements.
5. Propose improvements to production procedures, equipment reliability, and operational efficiency.

Automation & Control Systems Support (Ignition)

1. Provide operational and technical support for plant automation and control systems.
2. Participate in cross‑training on Ignition HMI/SCADA systems, including system navigation, monitoring, alarm response, and basic configuration support.
3. Act as a technical backup to the Automation Manager during absences, outages, or off‑hours events.
4. Assist in investigating automation‑related issues impacting safety, quality, or production performance.
5. Work collaboratively with Automation, Maintenance, and Operations to improve system reliability and operator interaction.

AUTHORITY:

1. Authorized to travel on behalf of the Company and to incur the necessary expenses with prior approval of their Supervisor.
2. Authorized to hire, discipline and terminate personnel in the Production department with prior approval of his Supervisor.
3. To, if unable to contact more senior Plant or Head Office Managers, “take control and act” in any reasonable manner to maintain productivity, ensure safety and prevent equipment damage until definitive direction is received from Senior Management.
