Pay Level

VIUFA F1: $55,452 - $88,065 per annum (prorated if part-time).

Starting Salary

Technicians are placed on the F1 salary scale based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement, to an initial maximum of $74,614 per annum .

Duties:

The Vancouver Island University (VIU) Bachelor of Interior Design program prepares students to be creative, ethical, and industry-ready designers through inclusive, hands-on learning that blends theory, research, and real-world practice. We empower students to lead with purpose, embrace diverse perspectives, and design for the well-being of people and the planet.

The Interior Design Technician provides technical, operational, and organizational support to the Interior Design program, faculty, and students, ensuring studios, labs, and classrooms are fully functional for in-person delivery and instruction.

Technical Support and Operations
Provide in-person technical support to faculty and students, including classroom setup, instructional technology support, and software assistance. Maintain and support studios, classrooms, and labs, including plotters, printers, AV systems, and presentation equipment. Coordinate repairs with VIU IT Services and Facilities, install and maintain hardware/software, and keep an accurate equipment inventory.

Support students with plotter use and procedures. Manage plotter supplies, maintain drafting boards, and ensure all instructional spaces are safe, organized, and operational.

Organizational and Program Coordination Support
Act as the program's digital liaison, supporting daily operations and coordination. Duties include maintaining VIU Learn, managing student communications and enrolment updates, supporting orientation and intake, coordinating after-hours access, and assisting with meetings and digital setup. Also supports travel, field trips, procurement, purchase orders, expense tracking, and departmental purchasing while liaising with Facilities, IT Services, Security, and Finance. Includes supervising work-op students, coordinating volunteers, and supporting community partnerships.

Curatorial, Materials Library and Resource Management Support
Maintain the materials resource room, storage areas, and inventories. Duties include organizing and cataloguing materials and equipment, preparing and cutting material samples (e.g., tiles, carpet, and wood flooring) for student and instructional use, and coordinating donations. Maintain storage systems and conduct regular safety and cleanliness checks. Ensure proper storage of materials, coordinate volunteers, and support upkeep of instructional tools and resources.

Exhibitions, Events and Student Showcase Support
Supports exhibitions, showcases, portfolio reviews, and program events. Duties include assisting with setup and takedown, preparing signage and print materials, managing display storage, and supporting event logistics and communications. Assists with guest speakers, industry events, scheduling, travel coordination, and promotional activities, and maintains a visual archive of student work.

Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to student success, collaboration, inclusivity, and effective support of a studio-based academic environment.

Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities, including, student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications:

A degree or diploma in Interior Design, Architecture or Design Technology from an appropriately accredited institution, or a related field, is required with equivalent education and experience.

Required skills include proficiency in Design software programs. Strong organizational, communication, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills are required, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

The candidate is practical and hands-on, with basic shop or fabrication skills and the ability to safely cut and prepare material samples (e.g., tiles, wood, and other finishes) into smaller instructional formats.

Physical ability to lift and move equipment and materials is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with experience supporting Interior Design, Architecture, or other studio-based academic programs. Experience maintaining materials libraries, inventories, storage systems, exhibitions, events, procurement processes, or administrative coordination is considered an asset.

Preference will be given to individuals with proficiency in AutoCAD, REVIT, Sketchup, Procreate, Microsoft Office + Teams, plus experience with classroom technology, AV systems, plotters and printers.
