About our Team: The Experiential Learning Team (ELT) within Gustavson fosters lifelong learning through diverse experiences. We serve as a catalyst to bridge theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom and real world application towards the development of socially responsible leaders. Through various initiatives (e.g. student and team coaching, volunteer tax clinic, classroom presentations ), the team facilitates opportunities for students to engage in hands on learning activities and reflections that enhance their academic, personal and professional development. The salary range for this position is:
Recruitment range: $62,989- $69,444 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.
Performance range: starting salary to max of $81,896 is available through annual performance increases.
Job SummaryReporting to the Associate Director, Experiential Learning, the Experiential Learning Officer will work collaboratively with other Experiential Learning staff to support the experiential priorities across the business undergraduate program. The main focus for the Experiential Learning Officer is to develop, implement and support personal and career development courses, such as COM 405. COM 405 is a part of the experiential learning initiative, and is curriculum-based programming that connects students with appropriate opportunities for career development. Examples of these activities can include (but are not limited to) orientation, conferences, project based learning, and team coaching on program deliverables.
The Peter B. Gustavson School of Business Bachelor of Commerce Program has an international focus and a mandatory co-op component. The School is strongly aligned around our three areas of specialization (International Business, Entrepreneurship, and Service Management, and Sustainability).
There are approximately 1,000+ students in five cohort groups annually. The student base is made up of local, national and international students. These diverse groups require transcultural awareness and knowledge, and very different professional development strategies and various resources for these students during their undergraduate degree. The Experiential Learning Officer (ELO) is a key resource within the BCom program to identify and build these professional skill development activities for undergraduate students. The ELO is involved in the planning, coordination and delivery of the COM 405 Career Prep Across Borders course, that involves both face-to-face and e-platform delivery. The ELO is responsible for student coaching, individual student course planning, and workshop implementation. This includes developing and organizing course specific events, including a mandatory, annual conference-style event for all students that involves external stakeholders. This role will support the development of career-ready graduates by intentionally threading experiential learning, reflection, and career education.
The incumbent will be expected to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate communicating with students on international co-ops and exchanges.
Duties and responsibilities are not limited to, but may include:
- Implementation of the COM 405 Career Preparation course
- Coach individual students and student teams
- Implement the teamwork curriculum for BCom
- Facilitating workshops for undergraduate students
- Partnering with members of the experiential learning team, as well as internal Gustavson team members, to ensure that programming creates learner-driven outcomes
- Developing relationships quickly with students, community partners, staff, and faculty
This position requires a relevant undergraduate degree in Business, Education, Leadership or other appropriate discipline, plus minimum 3 years of related experience including:
- Coaching individuals and teams
- Workshop facilitation
- Education program management implementation and assessment
- Diverse work environment and sensitivity to a diverse stakeholder population
- Collaborative relationship building
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Competency requirements include:
- Ability to motivate and inspire others, strong commitment and passion to enhance the student experience
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with evidence of the ability to communicate in a trans-cultural environment
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
- Ability to work both in person and online
- Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Ability to build relationships with a diverse student population
- Demonstrated administrative, research, and organizational skills
- Demonstrated initiative and willingness to champion innovation and new processes
- Sensitivity to student mental health and wellness
Knowledge requirements include:
- Experience in the design and delivery of in person and online educational programs
- Project management best practices, particularly in managing numerous priorities and special events
- Connecting objectives and outcomes to program goals
- Excellent digital literacy, including the use of MS Office (particularly Outlook, MS Teams, Word, Excel), databases, and Zoom
- Understanding of career education theory an asset
- Awareness of mental health resources and initiatives
Assets or Preferences:
- Previous experience in career coaching and career education an asset
- Previous experience in a post-secondary environment an asset
