Education Coordinator
$52.19k - $55.37k per yearSafeLink Alberta
SafeLink Alberta delivers services throughout Southern Alberta. As a non-profit organization, we work to reduce the risks associated with sexual activity and substance use. We serve and advocate for priority populations by offering low-barrier, non-judgmental, and informed programs and services. We offer a fun and energetic environment that provides opportunities for you to utilize your talents and develop new skills.
About the Role
Reporting to the Manager, Community Engagement, the Education Coordinator is responsible for creating, implementing, and evaluating education platforms focused on sexual health, substance use, and reducing harms within our key population communities. The coordinator will identify and implement best-practice and evidence-based strategies to build policy and practice guidelines, and to develop the capacity, skills, and knowledge of both frontline service providers and leadership professionals.
All roles within the Community Engagement team contribute to a collaborative, community-centered approach that advances organizational priorities in reducing harms, health equity, and stigma reduction. Team members engage with diverse communities and stakeholders, participate in outreach and public-facing events, and contribute to education, capacity-building, and engagement initiatives. The Education Coordinator has a shared responsibility for building and maintaining strong partnerships, ensuring consistent and accurate communication, improving access to services, and promoting safer, healthier outcomes for all.
This is a full-time position (35 hours a week), working primarily Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm. A flexible schedule including day, evening, and weekend availability will be required, particularly for community events. This is a term position ending March 31, 2027, with possibility of extension. This position is based out of the Calgary site; however, services will be provided across our provincial catchment area, including Medicine Hat, and rural communities in the Southern Alberta Zone.
What you will do
Program Development & Community Engagement:
- Work regularly with people at higher risk of STBBIs commonly called ‘Key Populations’ including people living with HIV, new immigrants, African Caribbean and Black communities, Indigenous Peoples, people who do substances, and sex workers.
- Conduct environmental scans and comprehensive literature reviews of best and promising practices on an ongoing basis.
- Engage with existing Advisory Committee members to gain insight on the development of culturally appropriate and community specific knowledge. The Committees will provide input and guidance on project components including training content and methodology, non-stigmatizing language choices, prioritized target audiences for capacity building, and evaluation design.
- Conduct focus groups with target audiences (health and social service providers) and with the Advisory Committees to inform program development.
- Develop a comprehensive training curriculum for presentations related to sex and sexuality within our key population communities
- Develop other capacity building tools (e.g. resource tools, policy guidelines, toolkits) to support the work and policy development of external agencies working in these areas.
- Develop and maintain relationships with community partners to enhance service delivery models.
Education and Capacity Building:
- Provide training to build the capacity of frontline service providers and community organizations to work effectively with key populations.
- Present workshops on various topics related to our key populations to community partners, post-secondary students, service providers, and the general public.
- Support public educational campaigns through social media content creation in partnership with the social media team.
- Research and maintain up to date and emerging information regarding population specific issues and reducing harms.
- Continuously monitor regional, national, and international research to stay current on issues and evidence related to reducing harms and sexual health.
Administration:
- Maintain program statistics and documentation and participate in ongoing program evaluation and reporting.
- Ensure project accountability through maintenance of outcome-based reports.
- Contribute to agency wide reporting such as the strategic plan and annual reports.
- Demonstrate a commitment to fostering Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) initiatives, actively participate in these efforts within the organization, and promote an inclusive environment for all individuals.
What you will bring
- Diploma or Degree in the Human Services field (preference to Social Work or Public Health), or equivalent in education with a minimum of two years related working experience
- Proven proficiency in public speaking and presenting educational workshops
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Basic graphic design skills and familiarity with design software (e.g. Canva, WordPress, and Microsoft Office) are an asset.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in community development principles.
- Strong knowledge in one or more key population is desirable.
- A strengths-based, harm-reduction, and human rights-based philosophy of service provision.
- Demonstrated cultural awareness and responsiveness in working across diverse populations.
- Possess foundational knowledge on IDEA principles in line with SafeLink Alberta’s values.
- High ethical standards and professionalism, with a demonstrated ability to adhere to strict confidentiality practices.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification is an asset.
- Provision of a criminal record check with vulnerable sector search is required. A positive criminal record check will not necessarily preclude a candidate from being hired - decisions will be made on an individual basis and all information will be kept confidential.
- Access to reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license are required.
