External Jobs – Regional Supervising Coroner (Sudbury)

Regional Supervising Coroner

Ministry of the Solicitor General
Salary: $370,113.00 – $407,968.00 Per year
Location: Sudbury, Ontario

Join us to serve the living through high-quality death investigations .
Do you have an interest in death investigation, a curious mind, and a strong commitment to public safety and community well-being? Are you committed to building respectful partnerships with health care organizations, investigation services, academic institutions, Indigenous Peoples and diverse communities to help advance Ontario’s death investigation system through collaboration? If you thrive in a multidisciplinary, high-profile environment and enjoy applying your communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills in meaningful ways, consider this impactful opportunity as Regional Supervising Coroner with the Office of the Chief Coroner (OCC), Ministry of the Solicitor General, serving the Northeast region, based in Sudbury.

Why Sudbury and the Northeast Region?
Sudbury is home to our regional office and is closely connected to the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service’s work in the North. The intersection between coroner services and forensic pathology is strong here, supporting timely, coordinated, and high quality investigations.

The Northeast is unique. Case complexity can be higher due to local factors and social determinants of health, such as remoteness, access to care, and community safety factors. Major transportation corridors (e.g., Highway 11/17) and winter conditions also shape the investigative landscape.

Local knowledge matters. We strongly encourage applications from physicians who are based in Sudbury or have ties to Northern Ontario. Community credibility, lived experience, and understanding of the North help build trust with families, First Nations communities, and co investigators.

The Ontario Public Service: Strengthening Ontario, together.

A career in the OPS is purpose-driven and people-centered.

  • Purpose-driven culture: Lead work that improves safety and well-being across Northern communities.
  • Empowering environment: Inclusive, diverse, accessible workplaces that value your authentic voice.
  • Leadership growth: Mentorship, cross-ministry collaboration, and broad leadership pathways.
  • Recognition and rewards: Competitive compensation, defined-benefit pension, comprehensive benefits, and wellness supports.

About the job :
We believe great leadership starts with high standards and strong support. In the OPS, that means showing up with authenticity, acting with integrity, and having the courage to do what’s right, even when it’s hard.

As a leader, you’ll shape a team culture that sparks innovation, supports collaboration, and champions inclusion. You’ll help build a workplace that is diverse, anti-racist, and accessible, where everyone feels safe, respected, and able to thrive.

You won’t be doing it alone. We invest in our leaders through mentorship, learning opportunities, and cross-ministry networks that help you grow your impact and connect with peers across the organization.

Leadership is about impact, and in this role, you’ll have the opportunity to make a meaningful one. You will:

  • Lead and engage a diverse team of professionals, fostering a culture of diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and excellence.
  • Inform and drive transformational changes within regional programs and policies.
  • Set district priorities, manage human and fiscal resources, and ensure that organizational objectives are met through careful planning and budgeting.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, including First Nations, investigative agencies, public safety personnel and municipal leaders, ensuring that community relationships and collaboration remain at the forefront.

Meet your New Team:
Ontario’s death investigation system is the largest in North America, overseeing ~20,000 investigations annually. The Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service work together to deliver coordinated, equitable investigations that reflect Ontario’s diversity.

As the Regional Supervising Coroner for Sudbury and the Northeast Region, you will:

  • Oversee investigations across the region, supported by a smaller but highly dedicated group of coroners who work closely with you.
  • Work in Sudbury with a team of professionals who provide operational, administrative, and stakeholder support.
  • Collaborate with a tight knit, supportive leadership team across the province that values diverse perspectives and shared problem solving.
  • Maintain strong relationships with co investigators in an area that faces real challenges, and real opportunities to inform improvements to health and safety.

Ready to Make an Impact?
As Regional Supervising Coroner, you’ll play a critical role in shaping a system that prioritizes integrity, equity, and public trust. Take the next step in your career and join a team where your expertise matters, your voice is heard, and your work has meaningful purpose!

What you bring to the team :
Mandatory requirements

  • A physician who is, or eligible to be, licensed and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
  • Ability to speak and understand both written and verbal French is an asset.
  • Leadership, management, and administrative abilities to plan and coordinate consultative and investigative activities, and to direct the operations of a regional office.
  • Commitment to inclusive leadership that embraces diversity and recognizes the importance of cultural safety in the context of death investigations.
  • Judgment and political acuity required to navigate highly visible, complex, and sensitive issues.

Specialized Expertise:

  • Extensive medical experience complemented by the ability to collaborate with and manage other healthcare professionals.
  • Investigative knowledge and skills in general and forensic investigation techniques, including an understanding of pathology, toxicology (e.g., drug reactions and toxicity), and industrial safety.
  • Understanding and application of relevant legislation and guidelines related to death investigations and inquests (e.g., Coroners Act, Gift of Life Act, Anatomy Act, Vital Statistics Act, Funeral Burial and Cremation Services Act).

Communication and Relationship Management Skills:

  • Communication skills to interact effectively with the public, grieving families, media, and professional partners in a respectful and compassionate manner.
  • Awareness of diverse service needs and the importance of delivering culturally responsive and inclusive services.
  • Interpersonal and relationship-building skills to engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including communities, medical professionals, legal colleagues, and law enforcement.
  • Written communication abilities to develop inclusive, clear, and culturally sensitive materials such as reports, memoranda, newsletters, and media releases.
  • Discretion and professionalism in managing sensitive and confidential matters in alignment with corporate policies and directives.
