We are a self-governing modern treaty nation situated on the West Coast of Vancouver Island in Barkley Sound. Known as the t uk!ʷaaʔatḥ (Toquaht People), we are a resilient community dedicated to the development of our Nation. We strive to honour the teachings of our ancestors and safeguard our ḥaaḥuułi (territory).

Toquaht envisions a healthy community where masčim (citizens) can fulfil their social, spiritual, and economic needs. Guided by our ancestors and rooted in our traditions, we draw strength from our connection to our haaḥuupacamis (teachings):

The Role
Toquaht leadership is seeking an accomplished and passionate Director of Operations to guide our team. As the most senior administrative role in our organization, the Director of Operations leads the government administration and is accountable to the Executive. Approximately 39 staff and contractors work to provide programs and services and to achieve Toquaht government priorities as outlined in the Strategic Plan.

The Director of Operations is guided by our Maa-nulth Treaty , our Constitution , and all Toquaht Laws. To advance the interests of Toquaht Nation, the Director works collaboratively with our Treaty partners: Huu-ay- aht First Nations, Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’/Che:k’tles7et’h’ First Nations, Uchucklesaht Tribe, Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ First Nation, the Government of Canada, and the Province of British Columbia. The Director also maintains close partnerships with local governments to foster mutual understanding and work towards shared objectives.

You are highly dedicated to capacity building with a focus on t uk!ʷaaʔatḥ, taking a human-centred and culturally aware approach to supervision that supports people in achieving their fullest potential. You will provide tactical leadership and overall policy direction to personnel, play a crucial role in managing day-to-day operations, ensure the full implementation of the Toquaht Strategic Plan, foster community and economic development, and promote Toquaht culture and values.

The Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in political science, public policy, business administration, leadership, resource management, or a relevant field.
• Proven leader with 5 to 7 years of management experience and a demonstrated capacity for directing staff and working in a harmonious manner.
• Comprehensive knowledge of Indigenous cultures and protocols, especially those of nuučaan uł (Nuu-chah-nulth) First Nations, as well as federal and provincial governance structures, laws, and policies.
• Knowledge of and experience with a modern treaty nation government are preferred.

What We Offer
In addition to the opportunity to work alongside a compassionate, like-minded team, Toquaht Nation offers an annual salary range of $143,300 to $177,800, based on the candidate’s education and experience, and a generous benefits package.
