Director of Occupational Health, Safety, and Wellness

Health PEI

Reporting to the Chief Human Resources Officer, the Director of Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness leads and provides strategic direction to a team of wellness and safety professionals who guide, influence, collaborate, provide expert advice, and direct managers and staff in all aspects of safety and compliance, return to work, musculoskeletal injury prevention, employee health, respiratory protection, psychological safety, peer support, respectful workplace, emergency preparedness and response, and violence prevention across Health PEI.

The position also provides strategic occupational health and safety advice, recommendations, and support to the management structure, in accordance with applicable legislation, and is the main conduit for decision making with the Chief Human Resources Officer, as well as the Executive Leadership Team.

Duties:

  • Provides strategic and effective leadership of the following service/program areas:
  • Return to Work
  • Safety and Compliance
  • Employee Health Nursing
  • Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention (MSIP)
  • Violence Prevention (including Provincial Security oversight)
  • Respectful Workplace
  • Respiratory Protection
  • Post-Traumatic Event Response
  • Workplace Wellness
  • Overall leadership to the OH&S function for approximately 6,800 staff in a shift rotation organization
  • Present high-quality advice, support, recommendations, and information to the Board, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Leadership Team pertaining to system policy and strategy direction, effective and efficient stakeholder engagement, decision making and prioritization processes, and effective and efficient processes to manage, monitor and report on system performance and results.
  • Provides strategic leadership direction and program alignment with the Healthy Teams component of the Health PEI Strategic Plan.
  • Designing and supporting a system-wide implementation of disability-related duty to accommodate processes in all contexts including injury-on-duty/workers’ compensation-related cases, returns from extended sick leave, as well as returns from long term disability.
  • Set the strategic direction for a positive safety culture for Health PEI, an organizational culture that places a high level of importance on safety beliefs, values, and attitudes.
  • Ensuring Health PEI’s culture of safety embraces both patient AND employee safety.
  • Ensuring the Occupational Health, Safety & Wellness team is aligned to support safety and ingrain safety awareness for self, co-workers and patients into all work.
  • Develop and continue to grow the workplace wellness strategy for Health PEI, including the creation and executive support for a Provincial Employee Wellness Team.
  • Direct efforts to raise awareness of psychological health and safety in the workplace, aligning with Health PEI’s goals and objectives.
  • Comprehensive strategic planning and direction related to Human Resources within the organization’s governance structure

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a university degree supplemented with training /course work in disability management, labour relations, and human resource management, master’s degree in the related fields preferred.
  • Must have extensive leadership experience in the strategic planning and responsibility of Occupational Health and Safety services (ie. safety and compliance, violence prevention, return to work, ergonomics, psychological safety etc.) in a multi-union complex environment providing 24/7 services
  • Requires exceptional interpersonal, collaborative, facilitation, organizational, conflict management, and leadership skills
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant legislation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be able to demonstrate experience of working in a results-based environment, where accountability for outcomes was a key responsibility
  • Demonstrated proficiency with typical business software applications, specifically Oracle PeopleSoft, as well as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, etc.
  • Valid driver’s license and access or access to reliable transportation

Other Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the health system and its various contracts would be considered an asset.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) Designation would be considered an asset
  • Registration with the Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) is considered an asset.
  • Certification or diploma in Occupational Health and / or Integrated Disability Management would be considered an asset
  • Certification as a Psychological Health and Safety Advisor would be considered an asset

Salary Range: $58.85-$72.73
