Community Engagement Lead

This exciting position works with the curatorial and programming staff at the City of Edmonton's Attraction facilities such as the Muttart Conservatory, City Arts Centre, John Walter Museum and John Janzen Nature Centre, to develop partnerships and implement a new process for creating, nurturing and growing exhibits and programs.

Besides the creation of community exhibits, this position has a role in raising awareness of community partners that the City values and appreciates the preservation of their stories, traditions and history within Edmonton either through artifacts or records which could be donated to the City's museum or archives collections.

There is also a focus on how to make various City places and programs welcoming to all kinds of visitors to give them (newcomers to Indigenous People to open minded settlers looking for new learning opportunities) a sense of belonging and inclusion. They should also feel welcome to come into our facilities as partners for sharing and developing programs related to their culture and heritage.

As the Community Engagement Lead you will:

• Assess outreach opportunities in the community and develop new programs with an emphasis on heritage
• Be responsible for ongoing consultation and communication with key stakeholders to establish program needs and priorities and ensure that these are met through the development process
• Review contracts and agreements to ensure our facility and museum's mandate/focus is reflected
• Develop and implement an Exhibition Strategy/Framework that guides decisions regarding which collection projects the Heritage Unit will support
• Act as primary liaison with other City Departments in the development and implementation of external community partnerships, temporary exhibit spaces
• Identify, engage and maintain relationships (in tandem with the Archival {especially the Community Archivist}, Curatorial and Facility staff) with Internal and External Stakeholder groups through the project development process to keep them informed and engaged at the appropriate levels
• Provide support to Section or Branch initiatives, especially as they pertain to partnerships or community engagement around programs, heritage and conservation (i.e. JWM Indigenous Content Manual, sitting on Nikaniw Youth Program expansion committee)
• Develop procedures to inform staff on how to initiate, develop and maintain partnerships in the heritage, conservation areas and socialize within the Community Recreation and Culture branch
• Maintain contact list relating to where cultural community and community of interest collections may be held outside the City to build a database of where exhibit / research collections and subject matter experts might exist
• Perform related work as required

Qualifications :

• Bachelor's Degree in Arts, History, Museum Studies, Interpretation, Program Management or other related discipline
• A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in the following: Program development, staff management and customer experience enhancement, volunteer management, of a scope and scale similar to the recreation centres and Attractions that exist within Community facility services
• Demonstrated skill and experience in developing public engagement charters, tools, and tactics to address diverse groups of stakeholders and complex project, program or policy challenges
• Demonstrated experience in facilitating public engagement tools and techniques virtually and in-person with diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders
• Significant levels of political acumen and ability to navigate the varying levels of bureaucracy
• Excellent project and process management skills and budgeting, including the ability to manage multiple projects/processes concurrently and proactively
• Ability to effectively gather, synthesize, integrate, and interpret multi-faceted information from a wide range of sources and perspectives
• Ability to understand and share a broader vision (i.e. links to corporate/branch strategic goals, strategic plans, political requirements)
• Ability to build effective working relationships internally and externally
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including report writing along with strong facilitation and presentation skills
• Strong leadership, negotiation and team building skills
• Significant ability and skill in establishing and maintaining relationships, leading/facilitating meetings of multiple stakeholders
• Knowledge of program development, delivery and event management
• Have cultural awareness of diverse population
• Awareness of arts and heritage professions and standards (artists, archivists, curators, dance, music and movement performers, exhibit designers, etc)
• Skills in Partnership management (agreements, negotiations, scheduling)
• Familiarity with City's facilities for recreation, arts and culture
• Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style
