The Water Quality Management Section leads provincial efforts to manage and protect water quality in rivers and lakes across Manitoba. This Lake Winnipeg Water Quality Monitoring Assistant will conduct water quality monitoring and related work in support of Manitoba’s Lake Winnipeg water quality monitoring program.

The incumbent will be responsible for routinely collecting water, benthic and sediment samples at stations located in the north and south basins of Lake Winnipeg in support of the Department’s long-term Lake Winnipeg water quality monitoring program. The incumbent can expect to be involved in Lake Winnipeg surveys on a research ship called Motor Vessel (MV) Namao. Each survey is approximately three weeks in length; occurring in the spring (June), summer (August) and fall (September) with accommodation being on the MV Namao. In addition to sample collection, the incumbent will conduct depth profiles for dissolved oxygen, conductivity, light and temperature and will record environmental field data such as Secchi depth, air temperature, etc. at each station. In addition to offshore sampling via the MV Namao, the incumbent will participate in nearshore sampling of Lake Winnipeg via a workboat. Furthermore, the incumbent will be required to perform duties in the office such as completing quality assurance/quality control, organizing and collating datasets, and ensuring water quality data is properly loaded to our Environmental Management Database. There is potential for the incumbent to be involved in other water quality related research projects in the Department as needed.

Essential:

• A degree or diploma in an aquatic-related discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Experience with water quality and aquatic field sampling equipment and protocols.
• Strong problem solving, analytical and decision-making skills including the ability to collect, analyze, and interpret water quality and biological data, and recommend appropriate courses of action.
• Excellent organizational skills to meet time-sensitive deadlines.
• Ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Effective written communication skills.
• Effective verbal communication skills.
• Strong computer skills including proficiency using Microsoft Office or other comparable software applications.

Desired

• Ability to communicate in French.

Conditions of Employment:

• Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
• Must have a full Class 5 Driver's license in good standing and be comfortable with driving long distances using larger vehicles (e.g., caravan, 4 x 4 truck).
• Must be able to work long hours with occasional work on weekends or evenings, when required.
• Must be willing and able to travel throughout Manitoba with overnight stays.
• Must be physically capable of performing extensive field work (lift and carry 50 lbs) and comfortable working outdoors, in remote locations, and in varying weather conditions.
• Flexible hours may be required. The field program dates are highly variable and can change daily due to weather conditions.
• Must be willing to travel by boat (with overnight accommodation on a ship for weeks at a time).
• Must be comfortable working around water and confident in swimming capabilities
