About the Land Trust Alliance of British Columbia
The Land Trust Alliance of British Columbia (LTABC) represents 35 land trust members across the province. Associate members (consultants, environmental groups and individuals) bring our total membership to one hundred. LTABC maintains national, provincial, and regional partnerships with government agencies and organizations that are associated with land stewardship and conservation. These include the Canadian Land Trust Alliance, the BC Conservation Partnership, Provincial Environmental Organizations, Regional Conservation Partnerships and national, provincial and municipal government agencies. Since 1997 when LTABC was established, we have developed educational, research, and resource programs that have helped conservation groups steward, protect, and restore BC’s natural and cultural diversity. The LTABC has supported BC land trusts, with the help of generous donors and willing landowners, to protect well over one million acres of significant land within BC.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides strategic, operational, and financial leadership to advance the LTABC’s mission, deepen community awareness and impact, and strengthen long-term sustainability of the organization. The ideal candidate is a collaborative and visionary leader with a passion for land conservation and has a strong track record in relationship building, nonprofit leadership, and community engagement.
The Executive Director represents the LTABC provincially in British Columbia and federally across Canada and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the LTABC, which are guided by the Strategic Plan and Board of Directors. The role manages other employees and consultants to implement the LTABC’s mission and strategic goals through various programs and operations.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership
- With the Board, work to establish strategic priorities and performance goals.
- Lead execution of the strategic plan while supporting strong governance practices.
- Foster a culture of accountability and transparency, including clear, consistent, and timely reporting to the Board.
- Develop and maintain a resilient and positive work environment.
Community Relations and Advocacy
- Establish, nurture and maintain good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community members, Indigenous communities and leaders, funders, politicians, land trusts, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the organization.
- Communicate with land trusts and other stakeholders to identify, understand, and implement organizational related needs, to adapt to changes in the needs of land trusts, and to keep them informed of the work of the LTABC.
- Serve as the primary ambassador and spokesperson for the organization.
Financial Management and Fundraising
- Advance and implement diversified funding development strategies through grants, events, individual giving, and corporate partnerships.
- Oversee the organization’s marketing and communications strategy to enhance visibility and engagement.
- Oversee budgets, financial stewardship, and organizational performance.
- Provide accurate and timely financial reporting, including CRA compliance.
Operations and Management
- Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization and to ensure proper administration of all record keeping, including those relating to programs, finances, budget, and operational areas.
- With the Board of Directors, determine strategies to move the organization and land trust community forward. Set goals, create, and implement action plans and evaluate outcomes.
- Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements, policies, and national standards.
- Strengthen operational systems including data management and reporting processes.
- Uphold privacy and safety in alignment with organizational policies.
People and Culture
- Lead, mentor, and retain a high-performing team of staff and volunteers.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative workplace culture.
- Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and team development.
- Establish clear expectations and align HR practices with legislation, national standards, and organizational values.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Leadership with a wide range of experience working with organizations, governments, and funding agencies.
- Extensive knowledge of nonprofits and charitable organizations and familiarity with conservation and land trusts.
- Communicate effectively using an open mind, respect, and confidence.
- A strategic thinker, able to work independently and efficiently to best the strategic goals of LTABC and its membership.
- Advanced knowledge and experience with grant writing, funding partners, and fundraising .
- Ability to organize and set priorities under pressures of deadlines and competing requirements along with strong problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrate a willingness to be flexible and adaptable in a changing work environment while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency.
- Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set and meet goals, listen, resolve problems and conflicts, make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in nonprofit management, business, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Five or more years of employment experience in a leadership role in non-profit settings or related organizations.
- Experience in or working knowledge of the land trust community.
- Experience working with a Board of Directors, including governance, reporting, and strategic planning.
- Demonstrated success in grant writing, donor relations, and revenue generation.
- Working experience of budgeting, financial oversight, and resource allocation.
- Passion for conservation.
- Must be legally allowed to work in British Columbia, Canada.
- Must be willing to provide a Criminal Record Check.
Work Arrangement
Position location is flexible within British Columbia, preferably within easy travel distance of Vancouver and/or Victoria, BC, and could include a remote working arrangement depending on organizational needs. Travel to community events is expected.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range: $72,000 to $84,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
- Annual performance review with opportunity for merit-based increases.
- Full-time with the opportunity for a Flex employment schedule.
