BASIC FUNCTIONProvides support to all departments using their expertise with respect to electrical work. Installs, repairs, troubleshoots, and replaces electrical equipment and electrical components in regards to building, machinery, and equipment. Performs operational, predictive and preventative electrical maintenance duties while adhering to the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Canadian Electrical Code.Pay rate is $42.13 per hour.PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES1.Protect self and others by:Identifying, interpreting and applying applicable Acts, regulations, codes and directivesRecognizing, assessing and controlling hazards and hazardous conditions, equipment and materialIdentifying and using fire extinguishers and firefighting equipmentPerforming housekeeping duties to ensure a safe working environmentPracticing first aid in emergency situations with certified CPR. Selecting, wearing, adjusting, using and maintaining personal protective apparel and equipmentPerforming lockout, tagging and hold-off procedures. 2. Read, interpret and revise schematics, drawings and documentation by creating, maintaining or modifying existing drawings and sketches as well as by identifying, reading and interpreting:Architectural drawings and specificationsMechanical drawings and specificationsPower distribution drawings and specificationsInstrumentation and communication drawings and specificationsElectrical drawings and specificationsSolid state and logic drawings and specifications.3. Select, maintain and use tools and equipment including:Hand toolsElectrical power tools and accessories Rigging and hoisting equipmentScaffolds, lifting devices and elevating platforms 4. Also responsible for assembling, erecting and locating scaffolds, lifting devices and elevating platforms; dismantling and storing scaffolds, lifting devices and elevating platforms; selecting and performing basic oxy-fuel cutting and welding procedures; and, scheduling electrical job-site material and equipment requirements.5. Install, maintain and repair wiring systems by: Selecting and installing busway systems for rural, institutional, commercial and industrial installationsMaintaining and repairing busway systems for rural, institutional, commercial and industrial installationsSelecting, laying out and installing:Branch circuit wiring for power and lighting (as well as troubleshooting)Cable trays for power, data and communication cable wiring systemsFeeder cables for single and multi conductor cables, metallic and non-metallicRigid metal and rigid PVC conduitsElectric heating systemsWiring for hazardous locationsOverhead distribution systemsUnderground distribution systems 6. Select, install, maintain and troubleshoot power distribution equipment systems which includes:Secondary services High voltage protection and control Calculating the requirements for secondary service loads, fuses and feeders Power distribution panels Ground fault circuit interrupters Power factor correction equipment Low voltage power distribution systemsDirect current power distribution AC/DC protective devices 7. Select, install, maintain and troubleshoot lighting systems which includes:Incandescent lightingFluorescent lightingHigh intensity discharge lightingLight dimming and control systemsExit and emergency lighting8. Install, maintain and troubleshoot rotating equipment and associated control systems which includes the following:Brush assemblies, slip rings and commutatorsDC motors and generatorsAC motors and generatorsElectrical alignment and auxiliary protective equipmentMechanical, electrical alignment and auxiliary protective equipmentLubrication systemsBraking and clutch systemsStarting-up and shutting-down rotating equipmentRelays, solid state devices and controlsRelays, solid state devices and controlsProtective devicesWiring control panels, enclosures and control devices Field devices such as mechanical/remote field services.9. Install, maintain and troubleshoot motor drives and associated control systems which includes:DC constant voltage drives; installingSolid state variable DC drivesAC constant voltage drivesSolid state and variable AC drivesComputer based interface systemsLogic controller systemsComputerized numerical control systemsRobotic systems.10. Install, maintain and troubleshoot stand-by power systems and associated equipment by laying out:Uninterruptible power supply systemsBattery stand-by systemsStand-by power generation equipment.11. Install, maintain and troubleshoot communication systems which include: Communication cablesAlarm systemsCommunication system componentsAudio-visual systemsPatient care systemsSecurity systemsPage systemsClock systemAutomation systems12. Select, maintain and operate test and measuring equipment which include:Power and energy metering equipmentAnalog and digital multimetersElectronic test equipmentInsulation testersOscilloscopesFault locatorsHigh voltage test equipmentComputer-based test equipmentChart recordsElectrical test equipmentSpecial test equipment.13. Install, maintain, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation devices and systems. SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS (Licenses/Certificates)Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.Must be licensed Must hold valid Ontario Certification of Qualification issued by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities ORServed a bona fide apprenticeship of 9,000 hours, electrical license or who has eight years practical experience in the skilled trades classification in which he/she claims journey person designation and can prove same. (The Unifor Journey person's card will be accepted as proof.) or presently holds a journeyman's classification as an electrician, construction and maintenance or as an industrial electrician.Ability to meet all physical demands of the job including, but not limited to, heavy lifting, working in confined spaces, standing for long periods of time, working in hot and cold environments, rotating shifts.EFFORTRequires sitting or standing at a workstation, and walking.Requires periods of lifting, bending, and reaching to setup equipment, take measurements and examine parts.Requires visual sensory concentration, as well as manual dexterity and the need for exact results and precision.There are opportunities for breaks during routine operation. Periods of production upset and quality concerns require alertness and concentration.RESPONSIBILITYThere is some degree of job structure and a variety of tasks that are straightforward with some repetitiveness. In cases where the task requires the individual to make judgements, employees can use some discretion within predetermined limits and procedures. Some activities must be carried out in a team setting.Assignments require early detection of problems and notification of appropriate staff.Interaction with other staff is within the immediate area and communications are generally routine.
