Working for Student Recruitment
The Student Recruitment team at the University of Alberta is dedicated to recruiting prospective students to all programs at the institution. We achieve this by organizing and facilitating various recruitment events, outreach at high schools and post-secondary institutions, and other strategic initiatives. Our team also provides comprehensive support to prospective students, key stakeholders, parents/supporters, and counsellors by addressing inquiries via email, phone and virtual advising, guiding them through the initial stages of the university journey.
Position
This position reports to the Student Recruitment Service Partner for the College of Social Sciences and Humanities & Faculty of Native Studies within Student Recruitment in the Office of the Registrar. The Student Recruiter is responsible for the dissemination of information about the University of Alberta, specializing in the promotion of programs and services offered within the Faculty of Native Studies, to Indigenous and non-Indigenous junior high and high school students within Canada, post-secondary transfer students, parents/supporters, and counsellors. This includes the development and implementation of recruitment initiatives that will help meet the strategic recruitment goals of the Faculty of Native Studies, College of Social Sciences and Humanities (Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Education, and Alberta School of Business), and the university as a whole.
The Student Recruiter is the primary point of contact for prospective students to the Faculty of Native Studies and supports inquiries for undergraduate programs within the College of Social Sciences and Humanities. This individual will travel and attend events with varying hours of work (including evenings and weekends), observe emerging trends by prospective student populations, and flag areas of opportunities for future portfolio expansion. The Student Recruiter will develop/foster key stakeholders relationships and work closely with the Student Recruitment Service Partner, fellow Student Recruiters, key faculty stakeholders within the Faculty of Native Studies, and extended campus community.
Notes: This position requires working overtime and shifted hours year-round.
Duties
- Travelling to high schools, colleges, universities and special events in both rural and urban areas surrounding Edmonton, throughout Alberta, and Canada, to promote the Faculty of Native Studies and other University of Alberta programs in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities (Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Education, and Alberta School of Business).
- The Student Recruiter will be required to establish strong contacts and relationships with prospective students in First Nations reserves, Métis Settlements and rural communities with a high percentage of Indigenous students, at the high school and junior high school levels.
- Work with supervisor to identify potential markets for the Faculty of Native Studies.
- Drives U of A fleet vehicles to local and rural Alberta recruitment events.
- In consultation with the Student Recruitment Service Partner and the Faculty of Native Studies Student Services team, responds to inquiries and performs preliminary evaluation of admissibility and suitability to the Faculty of Native Studies for prospective students.
- Answers prospective student inquiries via phone, email, and advising sessions (in-person and virtual) for Faculty of Native Studies and all College of Social Sciences and Humanities faculties.
- Assist with pulling data and queries from Campus Solutions and Slate.
- Data entry - gather, enter, and maintain student inquiry data into Slate CRM.
- Works with the Student Recruitment Service Partner to assist in contributing directly to the development of all Faculty of Native Studies recruitment collateral, in consultation with the Recruitment Marketing Team in External Relations and the Faculty of Native Studies.
- Assists with the implementation, execution, and maintenance of virtual recruitment initiatives (video creation, chat room, faculty meetings, and email newsletters, etc).
- Organizes and represents the Faculty of Native Studies at in-person and virtual recruitment events (including Open House, registration workshops, information evenings, counsellor workshops, etc.) which includes booth design, developing presentation materials, and coordinating volunteers.
- Assisting with research, booking of venues and marketing.
- Assists the Student Recruitment Service Partner, who will work closely with Faculty of Native Studies leadership, with the development of a Native Studies Undergraduate Recruitment plan. The plan will be developed in close consultation with the Faculty of Native Studies, and in alignment with the overarching Undergraduate Recruitment Strategy within the Student Recruitment. This includes the development and implementation of new recruitment initiatives within the Faculty of Native Studies.
- Evaluates attended recruitment events for effectiveness and efficiency; Monitors regularly the success of activities and proposes adjustments to ensure that overall recruitment goals are met, inclusive of tracking admissions within the Faculty of Native Studies.
- Contacts and communicates regularly with high school and junior high school teachers, counsellors, First Nations, Métis, Inuit (FNMI) Education, post-secondary coordinators and Indigenous communities to promote the Faculty and its programs, as well as provide up-to-date information and advice regarding both Faculty of Native Studies academic and U of A non-academic programs and services.
- Develops and maintains strong relationships and contacts with Elders, community members, high school counsellors and teachers, and parents/supporters in the target areas through letter mail, phone, email, e-newsletters, and personal visits.
Minimum Qualifications
- Post-secondary diploma required. University degree preferred.
- Excellent communication skills, including very strong public speaking and presentation skills, as well as verbal and written skills.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities and Indigenous youth.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, cross-cultural sensitivity, ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with a variety of stakeholders.
- Demonstrated problem solving, initiative, judgment, and critical thinking.
- Well-developed planning, time management and organizational skills; ability to meet deadlines and thrive under pressure in a fast paced and dynamic work environment.
- Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism.
- Proficient in Google Suite and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License (clean driver's abstract will be required).
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of PeopleSoft, Slate, and/or Fresh Service.
- Knowledge of post-secondary institutions, options, policies and procedures including basic transfer and credit information.
