Senior Construction Broker (Canada)

Willis Canada Inc.’s (“Willis”) National Construction team is looking to recruit an individual for the role of Senior Construction Broker. Preference is for the candidate to be based in Toronto or Montreal, but consideration will be given to qualified individuals located in Calgary or Vancouver. Willis is seeking a candidate with proven expertise in structuring and negotiating placements for complex construction risks, both project specific and annual programs as well as contribute to key construction team initiatives both internally and externally. As a member of Willis’ Canadian Construction Broking Team, this role will work with and support Willis’ construction accounts and new business opportunities across Canada.  This role will report into Willis’ North American Construction Practice with matrix-reporting into Willis Canada’s National Broking team.   

Primary responsibilities include advising on and negotiating insurance placements as part of Willis’ Canadian Construction Team, providing technical support to account teams and/or direct to clients, providing mentorship and support to members of the Canadian Construction brokering team, and actively engaging with carriers to grow and strengthen Willis’ market relationships. Additional responsibilities will include supporting and executing key broking strategies, building out WTW manuscript wordings, collaborating and supporting regional teams with RFPs opportunities, working with Willis’ global construction teams, participating in conferences, and involvement on panels/presentations to further the Willis brand. Based on the qualifications of the candidate and the business needs of the organization, this role may be adopted to include client servicing and support responsibilities.

Location: This position is based in Canada and operates on a hybrid work schedule, with a minimum of three days per week in the office, subject to business needs.

The Role

• Lead the design, marketing, negotiation, and placement of insurance programs for construction industry clients, including general contractors, specialty trade contractors, developers, and infrastructure/P3 organizations

• Analyze client exposures and develop tailored insurance solutions to address project-specific and operational risks.

• Work closely with account teams on renewal strategy development and execution.

• Timely delivery of insurance documentation, including but not limited to submissions, quote comparisons, proposals, and policy reviews

• Support the growth and development of the construction brokerage practice through mentorship, coaching, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing 

• Communicate and work directly with clients to discuss risk exposures, insurance strategy, and to present insurance quotes.

• Active market engagement to maintain and build close relationships with insurance partners, particularly with construction underwriting teams. 

• Build and maintain positive and collaborative working relationships within the construction team and across Willis Canada.

• Actively participate in the insurance industry and construction industry to elevate the presence and reputation of the organization and Willis’ Canadian construction team.

• Facilitate and drive the use of Willis’ analytical modeling for clients for best optimized risk program placements. 

• Adoption and utilization of Willis’ internal service excellence models, placement platforms, and systems 

• Periodic business travel, as required. 

Qualifications

The Requirements

• Excellent negotiation skills and ability to review and interpret complex insurance contracts and policy documents.
• Demonstrated expertise in placing complex construction insurance programs, including Builders' Risk, Wrap-Up Liability, Commercial General Liability, Excess Liability, Commercial Automobile, Contractor’s Equipment, and related coverages

• Deep understanding of construction contracts, project delivery methods, and project-specific insurance requirements 

• Ability to foster and maintain strong relationships with insurance partners

• Active Insurance Broker License (Level 2 or equivalent) in good standing within the applicable province.

• Minimum of 7 + years of commercial insurance experience, preferably with a focus on construction risks in a brokerage environment. 

• Hybrid work schedule requiring a minimum of three days per week in the office

• Professional insurance designation (CAIB, CIP, CRM or equivalent) preferred. 

• Strong oral and written communication skills in English and French is required for all candidates residing in Quebec.

Compensation

The base salary compensation range being offered for this role is $125,000.00-$155,000.00 CAD per year.

This role is also eligible for an annual short-term incentive bonus.
